The article highlights that Microsoft 365 Copilot now utilizes GPT-5.6, shifting the focus from model intelligence to data grounding within the corporate ecosystem for superior business utility.

"Company Copilot is mediocre. Isn't ChatGPT better after all?"

I have heard this phrase many times at consulting sites. Half of it is correct. If you fight with raw intelligence, there are scenes where ChatGPT wins. However, the other half is missing.

On July 9th, that premise collapsed. This is because OpenAI started providing the latest model, GPT-5.6, as the priority model for Microsoft 365 Copilot. You can choose the same GPT-5.6 in ChatGPT as well. Both can now be equipped with the same brain.

"It's probably just a decent ChatGPT that can read internal data." To be honest, there was a time when I looked at Copilot with that same yardstick. So, I understand the feeling of looking down on it all too well.

But this was like having an excellent subordinate and just asking them "What can you do?" every day before sending them home. Whether you use the same brain as it is, or use it by giving it the company's internal context. That is the only difference.

What you should compare is not intelligence. It is whether it is grounded in the company's context.

This time, I will demonstrate how things change by throwing the same question to the same GPT-5.6. By the time you finish reading, the answer to "Isn't ChatGPT better?" will come out of your own mouth. Let's begin.

Chapter 1: Why People Who Stop at 'ChatGPT is Smarter' Lose Out

"Isn't it most rational to compare performance and choose?" — I want people who feel that way to read this. There are three reasons why you lose out if you stop there.

Pitfall ①: Choosing a partner based on someone else's test scores

How many points on a benchmark, what percentage in coding. The numbers are accurate. But they aren't measuring your monthly report or tomorrow's business meeting preparation. You are deciding your tools based on the ranking of someone else's exam. This is the first misalignment.

Pitfall ②: Not knowing the fact that the brains have become the same

Since July 9th, the priority model for Copilot is GPT-5.6. OpenAI has officially announced that this applies to Word, Excel, and more. The same brain is running inside company apps. This premise is not yet widely known.

Pitfall ③: Asking the company Copilot the same way as raw ChatGPT

"Fix this sentence," "Summarize this." Asking the same way as raw ChatGPT and getting the same answer. Then concluding, "As I thought, it's the same." This is the most common misunderstanding.

I once paid 500,000 yen for consulting and couldn't generate a single yen. It wasn't that the content was bad. It was my own problem of not being able to utilize it. Tools are the same. Whether you make the most of it or kill its potential depends on you.

Up to this point, we've seen the true nature of the misunderstanding. Next, I'll show you the moment the same brain becomes something else entirely.

Chapter 2: The Essence is Not 'Intelligence' but 'Whether You Showed the Company's Content'

It's hard to convey with words alone, so I'll actually show you.

One honest point first. The "Company Copilot" mentioned here is Microsoft 365 Copilot for corporate contracts, which reads across internal files and meetings. The Copilot that comes for individuals is a different thing that helps with your own Word or Excel.

I am independent and do not have a corporate environment. The following is organized based on verification of specifications in official documents and screens I've seen at client sites. Note that to use GPT-5.6 in ChatGPT, a Plus plan or higher is required. The free version remains the previous model.

I throw the same question to the same GPT-5.6. The question is: "Tell me the reason why cancellations of our main product increased last month."

[When asking raw ChatGPT]

"Possible main causes for cancellation include decreased price competitiveness, support quality, and the rise of competitors. It is important to collect customer feedback and analyze the causes."

— This is correct. But this is a general theory you've read somewhere. It's an average answer that would be the same no matter who you asked.

[When asking company Copilot]

First, based on internal cancellation data and recent inquiry emails, the causes are listed with the number of cases. Citation links show which statement from the "Q3 Meeting Minutes" was picked up, and you can open it on the spot to check the content. For items not in the materials, it clearly states "No description."

It's not a summary. It's material for judgment. The brain is the exact same GPT-5.6.

Same brain, same question. The only difference is whether you showed the company's content. That's it.

Mr. Kunimitsu, known for AI implementation and organizational theory, cites three factors that change the output of the same AI: data volume, detail of instructions, and number of dialogues. He points out it's a matter of how you provide information.

I myself didn't change outputs by switching tools. As a result of creating my own dedicated AI with prompts exceeding 20,000 characters, the writing time for one article went from 5 hours to 2 hours. It's the same AI. The only thing I changed was how I provided information.

Next, we will look at why raw ChatGPT cannot see that "company content."

Chapter 3: Three Arenas Where Raw ChatGPT Cannot Compete

I'll say it clearly. This is the part I want to convey most in this article. There are three arenas where only the company Copilot can stand.

Arena ①: Reading across internal data

Copilot traverses emails, chats, and documents through a mechanism called Microsoft Graph. SharePoint materials, Teams conversations, and Outlook history are all connected by a single query. The scope of what it sees is different from raw ChatGPT, which only sees what you input.

Arena ②: Seeing only within your own permissions

Copilot uses only the data that the signed-in person can access as material. Materials without permission are not visible to Copilot. Microsoft explicitly states that it inherits existing access controls as they are. It is designed so that even if you pass company information, it does not go outside the boundaries.

Arena ③: Interactions remain within the company

Questions and answers remain in the internal history with citations. You can follow up later on "what happened with that matter." What is accumulated is different from usage that ends on an individual's screen.

You don't need to be on guard. No programming or difficult settings are required. Just stop asking the same way as raw ChatGPT and add one line about the location of materials and the format of the output.

(Reference internal target data: e.g., proposal materials in the sales shared folder and business meeting memos from the last 3 months) and analyze (what you want to hear: e.g., the reason why cancellations of the main product increased).

There are three conditions:

① Show the parts used as evidence with citations.

② For items not written in the materials, clearly state "No description" and do not fill them with speculation.

③ Finally, propose one action that can be verified immediately this week.

Just by pasting this, general theories turn into judgment materials.

Here, I will also write three honest boundaries.

First, the corporate version of ChatGPT also has connectors to connect to internal tools. It's not that "raw ChatGPT can't do it at all."

Second, the priority model doesn't mean all processing becomes GPT-5.6; multiple AIs are used selectively behind the scenes. Third, in companies where permissions are too broad, even materials that were originally buried will appear in answers. Behind the convenience, an inventory of permissions is necessary.

Summary: The Brain Has Already Been Distributed

This time, I talked about separating raw ChatGPT and company Copilot not by intelligence, but by "whether they are grounded in the company's context." Finally, just once more, the core of this article.

"ChatGPT is smarter" is half correct. But from July 9th, the brain became the same GPT-5.6. The remaining difference is not intelligence, but only whether you are providing the company's content. If you use it as a question box in its raw state, Copilot will remain a "decent ChatGPT" forever. Only the moment you provide internal materials does it become a partner.

That said, you don't need to provide everything at once. There is only one thing to do.

The next time you open your company's Copilot, just specify "one internal file to reference" before your question.

It only takes 10 seconds. Once you see the answer written in "your company's words," you won't be able to ask empty-handed anymore. AI is a weapon for the have-nots to overturn the situation. That weapon is already waiting within your company's license.

Both Copilot and ChatGPT evolve really fast. Rather than trying to keep up with the latest on your own, it is overwhelmingly faster to learn from those who are practicing it.

Thank you for watching until the end.
