The name Krakatoa inevitably evokes the apocalyptic events of 1883, but a new Anak Krakatau eruption should not automatically be interpreted as the beginning of a comparable catastrophe.

Volcanologists assess changes in seismic activity, gas emissions, ground deformation, thermal signals and eruption patterns before determining whether the volcanic system is moving toward a more dangerous phase.

For coastal residents, the immediate priority is therefore not panic but verified information. Official exclusion zones must be respected, and fishermen and tourist vessels should remain well outside the restricted area. Communities facing the Sunda Strait should also remain familiar with tsunami evacuation routes, particularly because the 2018 tsunami demonstrated that a volcanic collapse can generate destructive waves without a preceding tectonic earthquake.

Tonight, fire and ash are again rising from the birthplace of one of history’s most feared volcanoes. It is not the original Krakatau returning intact. It is something more remarkable: its geological descendant, steadily rebuilding an island inside the immense crater left when the old volcano tore itself apart.
