The cost of a pit stop is sufficient with stop time and speed limits. Do not punish drivers with the course layout itself.

2. Are Braking Zones Curved?

At corners intended for overtaking, keep the maximum braking zone as straight as possible.

In layouts requiring strong braking while steering, drivers use lateral grip, making it difficult to create large differences during braking.

Lines diving to the inside also become harder to execute.

The ideal is: Long straight → Complete straight-line braking → Low-speed corner.

3. Is There Really Strong Braking at the End of Long Straights?

A "long straight" alone does not create an overtaking point. What matters is decelerating rapidly from high to low speeds.

For example, dropping from over 300km/h to 100–140km/h allows drivers to exploit braking performance and line choices to pull alongside.

A high-speed corner at the end of a long straight is largely meaningless for overtaking.

4. Are Unnecessary Kinks Added Just Before Braking?

Do not add stylish elements like a slight left curve → slight right curve → braking at the end of overtaking straights.

This forces cars attempting to pull alongside to rejoin the queue.

Keep it basic: Straight → Braking only.

5. Is the Entry to Overtaking Corners Wide Enough?

Ensure the corner entry has enough width for at least:

  • The normal racing line
  • An attacking inside line
  • A defensive/parallel outside line

Avoid layouts where "one car on the fastest line completely blocks the track."

6. Can Two Cars Run Side-by-Side Through the Corner Exit?

Wide entries are useless if exits narrow sharply, creating a structure where "if one doesn't yield, contact is inevitable." Check this carefully.

Good overtaking corners are not just places to dive in, but places where two cars can battle until the end.

7. Is the Section Before Overtaking Straights a High-Speed Aerodynamic Corner?

Never design the point of closest approach to suffer from intense dirty air.

Before long straights, use low-to-medium speed mechanical grip corners as much as possible.

If a long straight exists but drivers lose a second in the preceding high-speed corner, overtaking will not happen.

8. Are There At Least Two Independent Overtaking Points?

With only one overtaking spot, defenders only need to guard that location.

Provide at least two, ideally more, overtaking points with different characteristics.

Examples include:

  • Hairpin after a long straight
  • 90-degree corner after a medium straight
  • Strong braking into a different direction

9. Is There Sufficient Acceleration Distance to Turn 1?

The start is one of the most natural moments for position changes in F1.

If the distance from the start line to Turn 1 is too short, the field locks up before slipstream advantages can be used.

Ensure enough space for multiple cars to run side-by-side.

10. Is It Just a Layout of Chained 90-Degree Corners?

Street circuits often default to 90° → short straight → 90° → short straight, which does not necessarily create overtaking.

Repeating short accelerations and short brakes leaves no time for trailing cars to pull out.

Courses must intentionally create sections designed specifically for overtaking.

11. Are You Confusing "Fun for Drivers" with "Exciting Races"?

High-speed and complex continuous corners are great for qualifying.

However, a fun track for solo laps ≠ a fun track for racing.

Balance sections for qualifying pace with sections that allow wheel-to-wheel battles in the race.

Summary

For new F1 circuits, being fast, safe, and visually appealing is insufficient.

You must satisfy four criteria: Can chase, Can pull alongside, Can pass, Strategy works.

Regarding pit lanes, shortcut the main track as much as possible to avoid unnecessary time loss.

What makes F1 races exciting is not quirky layouts, but a simple check: "When a fast car catches the one ahead, is there actually a place to fight?"
