A few months ago, I was barely active on X.
I had an account, but I wasn't really putting in the work. I wasn't posting consistently, I wasn't engaging much, and honestly, I wasn't expecting much from the platform.
Then I decided to take X seriously.
And the experience has taught me a few things I wish I knew from the beginning.
- Consistency really matters
You don't need every post to go viral.
Some posts will get amazing engagement. Others might barely move. That's normal.
The important thing is to keep showing up.
The more consistently you post, the more opportunities you give yourself to reach new people. One post can change the direction of your account, but you have to be active enough for that opportunity to come.
- Don't just post and disappear
This is probably one of the biggest lessons I've learned.
X isn't only about what you post. It's also about the conversations you join.
Reply to people. Join discussions. Give your opinion. Support other creators. Celebrate someone's achievement.
Sometimes a simple reply can introduce your account to people who would never have discovered you otherwise.
And don't only engage with huge accounts.
Small accounts are building too. Some of the best connections I've made have come from people who were also trying to grow.
- Give before you expect to receive
If you want people to engage with your posts, start by engaging with theirs.
If you want people to support your account, support theirs too.
Not every interaction needs to be transactional.
Genuine connections are much more valuable than simply trying to increase your numbers.
- Don't be discouraged by slow days
This one is important.
You can post something you genuinely like and it might get very little attention.
Then another random post you almost didn't think twice about can suddenly take off.
Don't let one bad-performing post convince you that you're failing.
Social media growth isn't always a straight line.
Keep learning what works. Keep experimenting. Keep improving.
- Your personality matters
There are millions of people posting on X.
You don't have to sound like everybody else.
Talk about what you actually enjoy. For me, that's football, everyday life, funny and relatable moments, trends, and connecting with other people.
Your personality is what makes people remember your account.
- Build relationships, not just followers
A follower is a number.
A real connection is much more valuable.
I've realized that building a community where people recognize your posts, reply to you, support you and have conversations with you is more rewarding than simply watching the follower count increase.
Numbers are great, but the people behind those numbers matter.
Final thoughts
I'm still learning.
I'm still experimenting with different types of content, different posting times and different ways of engaging with people.
But one thing I know for sure:
You can't build anything if you don't start.
If you're a small creator reading this, don't worry about having 10K followers today.
Start with the followers you have.
Talk to them. Create for them. Support other people. Keep showing up.
Your account today might look small, but that doesn't mean it will stay that way.
Keep building. Keep learning. Keep showing up.
