This guide details how to rigorously audit Solana memecoins after a developer exit. It emphasizes verifying token authorities, analyzing wallet cohort retention versus raw holder counts, and assessing genuine community engagement over superficial metrics.

Before You Call It a Cult

*The dev is out. The LP is burned. Thousands of holders remain. Someone has updated the socials.*

Read those four lines quickly enough and a rescue mission starts to look like a thesis.

Each claim deserves checking. Together, they still leave the hardest question unanswered: what makes somebody new want to join?

I like the idea of a community keeping a meme alive after its original team leaves. But a token can survive its deployer and still run out of buyers. Here's how I'd separate the two, especially on Solana.

Ask what the safety check actually cleared

Start with the exact mint address. A ticker and a familiar avatar are not an identity check.

Then inspect the token program and its authorities. Solana's mint authority controls new issuance; freeze authority controls whether token accounts can be frozen. Revoking those roles removes those particular permissions. It doesn't establish fair distribution or make somebody want the token. Token-2022 can also carry additional features and authorities, so two green boxes aren't a complete review. [1, 2]

Be equally precise with “LP burned.” Which pool? What proportion? Which mechanism?

Raydium's Burn & Earn, for example, permanently locks an LP position while a transferable Fee Key NFT preserves the right to collect its trading fees. Its documentation explicitly distinguishes locking from destroying the position. That is a useful protection against withdrawal of that position; it isn't a floor under the token price. [3]

These checks matter. I just wouldn't promote their result from “this permission is gone” to “this is a good trade.”

Follow the tokens beyond the first wallet

“The deployer holds zero” describes one address at one moment.

Look at how it reached zero. Selling, transferring to another wallet and depositing into a pool tell different stories. Follow the recipients before declaring the supply independent.

Treat wallet connections as leads, not verdicts. Shared funding through an exchange is not enough to prove common control. A top-holder table also needs context: a pool or custody address is different from an ordinary holder.

The honest conclusion may be: “These identified wallets are empty; I haven't established who controls the rest.” That's a stronger research note than pretending attribution is complete.

A rising holder count can hide people leaving

First find out what the dashboard counts. On Solana, one owner can have multiple token accounts for the same mint. Even a count that deduplicates owner addresses doesn't count human beings: one person can control multiple wallets. [1]

Here's a hypothetical example. Start with 1,000 holding wallets. Later, 300 no longer qualify and 500 new wallets do. The total rises to 1,200, while only 70% of the original group remains.

That isn't automatically bad. It also isn't proof of growing conviction.

Use the same balance threshold at both snapshots, so dust doesn't define your community. Separate purchases from transfers and airdrops. Then examine the old cohort and the newcomers. Did new wallets buy, keep a meaningful balance and return later? The headline total cannot answer that by itself.

Read what happens between announcements

A community takeover needs people doing the work. Who controls the social accounts? Who maintains the website? Who pays for activity, and who receives any remaining fees?

DEX Screener's takeover records include profile information, links and a claim date. I would use those as pointers for investigation, rather than evidence that a community is durable or a token is safe. [4]

My working test is quieter: open the replies when there isn't a fresh announcement. Look for original jokes, useful answers to newcomers, people making things, and disagreement that gets a real response. Then come back on another day.

Five accounts repeating the same thesis deserve a closer look. Similar wording doesn't prove paid coordination; it does give you a reason to ask about incentives.

A small group with recognisable contributors can interest me more than a huge room where every conversation ends with “raid this post.” That is a preference, not a reliable price signal.

Check what the exit would actually look like

Before imagining a recovery, inspect a sell quote for the position size you're considering. You can review a quote without executing a trade.

Compare expected output, fees and price impact. Price impact comes from trading against the available pool state; slippage is the difference between the quote and execution. A quote is a snapshot, not a promise about your eventual exit. [5]

Locked liquidity doesn't make those mechanics disappear. Nor does a market-cap number tell you how much your position can be sold for.

The note I'd want before calling it a cult

Write down the mint, the permissions still active, the supply you can attribute, the original holder cohort, who is doing the work, and what your sell quote shows. Put the unanswered questions beside them.

There's no score here that certifies a winner. A lively community can still be a terrible entry. A quiet token can still move sharply.

But “the old team left” is only the beginning of the investigation.

The part worth watching is who keeps turning up after the announcement stops doing the work for them.
