Hi! I’m Vlad, the founding designer at @paper.
I’m excited to share that we are opening up new principal-level roles on the product team: Product Designer and Design Engineer, to join us on our quest to build a beautiful, open, fast, collaborative tool that designers love.
About Paper
Good design is at the center of Paper. We started Paper not even two years ago because we love the design space, and there’s a special satisfaction in building a tool you’re excited to use yourself every day.
Today, we are incredibly grateful for the momentum we are seeing: growing revenue, world-class companies asking us to be a bigger part of their workflows, an unusually strong fan base, and a top-tier group of investors and angels behind us, such as Accel, Basecase, and ICONIQ.
Paper is already used by designers in production at some of our favorite companies.
Roles and requirements
Both roles are principal-level: an extensive body of work and recognition in the industry is expected.
Product Designer
- Exceptional generalist with a home base in product design, plus a track record of creating striking visual design and building brands
- Able to lead and direct design work across the company while still being an individual product design contributor on critical projects
- Expansive knowledge of creative tools and workflows
- Problem-solving mindset; you are allergic to complexity
- Excited about getting technical and working with engineers
- Obsessive about details without losing sight of the bigger picture
Design Engineer
- Able to design and implement complex UI features from scratch
- Impressive history of both design and engineering work
- Unmatched attention to detail and fine interactions
- Deep understanding of the DOM and browsers beyond framework-level abstractions
- Comfortable working with very few third-party libraries
- Skilled at UI performance, helping us hit our 120 fps target
- Friends with the browser’s performance profiler

The objective of the trial project is to ship a complete feature for Paper, working and communicating with the team directly in Slack and GitHub as a regular member. We will be flexible about how the trial project is arranged according to your availability.
