TL;DR

Apple recently stopped signing baseband firmware for several legacy devices, including the iPhone 5 and iPad 2, effectively preventing users from restoring these older models and sparking concerns about device longevity.

Yesterday, Around 6am EST, Apple stopped signing the baseband of some firmware for specific devices and has continued to do so throughout the day, continuing into this morning. Because these were the latest (and only) signed firmwares, Apple has essentially broke restores for these devices, basically making them e-waste.
