I don't read certification reference books from the first page.

There is something I do first. I put the entire reference book and past exams into Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM).

With just this, the reference book is no longer just a "book to read." It answers questions when asked. It gives you problems. It even grades them. Yes, it becomes a private tutor.

"I'm definitely getting it this year," you say as you buy the reference book. The first three days go well. But on the fourth day, you're late coming home from work, then you skip a day, then two. Before you know it, the reference book remains the cleanest book on your desk. Does this scene look familiar?

Let me say this first: it's not because your willpower is weak. Self-study is like enrolling in a school without classes and only being handed a textbook. There's no teacher. No tests. No one to grade your work. It's only natural that you can't keep it up.

Moreover, studying for certifications is something you do in the gaps between work and home life. You have no time. You're tired. Yet, the exam date doesn't move. If you're going to fight under these conditions, it's time for a system, not just grit.

In this article, I will show you how to turn your reference books and past exams into a "private tutor" who works 24 hours a day without a single complaint. I'll lay out the 3-step process and all the prompts I use. Let's go hire one.

Chapter 1: What Self-Study Lacks is Not Willpower, but a "Dialogue Partner"

Previously, I wrote an article titled "Everything About Gemini Notebook x Reading Techniques." That was about "reading" books. This time, we're evolving it further. Reference books aren't for reading; they are for "being questioned by."

Here's the logic in one minute.

The real reason self-study stops is that reference books are one-way. No matter how much you read, the book won't tell you "what you don't understand right now."

Even if you solve problems, grading and checking explanations is all your own work. On top of that, on a tired weekday night, your energy is drained just by deciding "what should I do today?" The logistics of studying break your heart more than the study itself.

When you have a partner, everything changes. If you don't understand, you ask. An answer comes back. If you ask "Is this right?", the correctness and the reasoning come back as a set. Studying changes from a "task" to a "conversation." This speed of response prevents the greatest enemy of self-study: procrastination.

And there's one reason why Gemini Notebook is suited for this role: its nature of thinking only within the provided materials. It answers within the closed world of the reference books and past exams you've chosen, rather than the vague sea of the internet. That's why it's less likely to mix in weird generalities, and every answer comes with a "source citation."

STEP 1: Put All Materials into One Notebook

Create a new notebook and name it "Tutor for [Exam Name]." Put these three things in:

• 1. Reference books (Digitizing books you bought yourself is within the scope of private use)
• 2. Past exams and explanations (The more you put in, the more accurate the weakness analysis will be)
• 3. List of exam topics (Syllabus. Available on the organizer's official website)

If you only have paper materials, digitize them via scanning or photos. Since it accepts PDFs, text, Google Docs, and images, you can even take photos of your handwritten summary notes and put them in.

"All the materials for this exam are in this notebook." This is the goal of STEP 1. However, this state is still just "being able to ask questions to the reference book." It's not a teacher yet.

STEP 2: Prepare the "Teaching Manual"

This is the part I want to convey most in this article.

For the notebook, the materials you put in are its entire world. A notebook with only reference books doesn't know "how to teach" that exam. If you give it data, it's a part-timer; if you give it a teaching manual, it's a professional instructor. So, before the main topic, add a "teaching manual" to the notebook.

Use the research function (Fast Research). Just throw in the following prompt and save the resulting research report as a source.

The three perspectives have meaning. The overview is the "map," the learning method is "how to proceed," and the frequent points are the "shortcut." The moment these three are gathered, the notebook transforms from "AI familiar with materials" to a "teacher who knows how to conquer that exam."

Look at how much it changes. For example, when you ask "What should I start studying?"

A notebook with only reference books only knows the reference books. It can only rely on the table of contents and the body text. So the answer tends to be a generality following the table of contents. It's not wrong. But it's just a reading of the materials.

A prepared notebook is different. It cross-references the report on question trends with the reference book and returns guidance like "Start with this frequently appearing field, in this order." And with citations.

The reference book is the same. The AI is the same. The only difference is whether the notebook knows "how to teach." That's it. And this manual creation is only done once at the beginning. It takes years for a human teacher to gain teaching experience, but a notebook teacher gains the ability to teach the moment you put in the report.

STEP 3: Give it a Persona and Make it a Private Tutor

This is the finishing touch. Paste this into the notebook's custom instructions (response style settings). This is the "persona" of your private tutor who is kind to beginners.

Once ready, ask "What shall we study today?"

There are three points. First, "never get fed up." Basic questions are the hardest to ask people—this personality trait crushes the biggest pain of self-study at the start. Next, "hints before answers." This prevents the illusion of understanding just by seeing the answer, a staple of private tutoring. And "say what's not there." Only a teacher who doesn't pretend to know everything can be relied upon for the real exam.

Give it a name, put in knowledge, and refine the persona. It's exactly the same flow as teaching a new junior colleague. However, this teacher doesn't get tired. They don't quit. Even if you ask the same question 10 times, they won't make a face.

Chapter 3: Three Private Tutor Lesson Menus

This is the most fun part. You make the teacher work. There are three lesson menus. By doing them in order, you can follow the flow of a human tutor: "Understand the whole -> Decide on a strategy -> Special training."

Menu 1: Have it Create a Learning Map for Passing

The first lesson is this: "Based on the materials in this notebook, create a learning map for passing." When the entire scope and the order of conquest are visible in one sheet, the time spent wondering "what should I do today?" disappears. The moment a thick reference book turns into a conquest map, you should feel a bit excited.

Once the map is ready, continue by asking:

"I can only take 30 minutes a day on weekdays. Assuming I finish in 3 months, make it a weekly plan."

It will even set up a timetable tailored to your life on the spot. It's always better to finish with a sustainable plan than to quit after three days with an impossible one. The teacher won't blame your lifestyle; they will adapt to it.

Menu 2: Have it Analyze "Frequently Appearing Fields" in Past Exams

"Organize the past exam questions by field and list them in order of frequency." Crush the fields with heavy scoring or those that appear every year. It's a natural strategy, but in self-study, this analysis alone can consume a whole weekend. If you leave it to the teacher, you just decide the order based on the results.

This analysis also helps maintain motivation. The despair of "it never ends no matter how much I do" comes from trying to cover the entire range evenly. If you crush them in order of appearance, you can feel yourself getting closer to passing by the amount you studied.

Menu 3: Run the Loop of Questioning -> Grading -> Weakness Explanation

This is the main special training. When you send this, the notebook turns into the "questioner."

Solve, get corrected, solve again. This rotation is the hardest thing to create in self-study and the one that most influences passing or failing. Questioning, grading, and explaining are all the teacher's job. You just focus on solving.

A subtle but effective tip: at the end of the training, say "Summarize the questions I got wrong today and the reasons why." A personalized weakness notebook will be built up just by asking. Right before the exam, just re-reading this will be the shortest total review.

Chapter 4: On Days You Can't Sit at Your Desk, Catch Up with "Ears" and "Fingers"

Now, the days you can sit at your desk are covered. The problem is the days you can't.

You come home exhausted and don't have the energy to open a reference book. This is when certification study most often breaks. But it's okay. The teacher also has the job of "creating materials" besides lessons. Use the Studio function to have your materials reshaped into forms you can "listen to, flip through, and try." You have three weapons.

Weapon 1: Audio Explanation—Commuting Turns into a Radio Course

Every morning, I put the day's meeting materials into a notebook and listen to the audio explanation on the commuter train. I apply this model directly to certification materials.

Create an audio explanation for the range you planned to do today and listen to it on the train to and from work. Since it uses neither hands nor eyes, learning doesn't stop even on days you don't have the energy to open a book. No need to get fancy with preparation. Just select today's range and play it. Listening every day is much more important than being elaborate.

Weapon 2: Flashcards—Gap Time Turns into Memorization Time

When you create flashcards in Studio, the important points of the materials become a deck of cards with "question on the front, answer on the back."

30 seconds waiting for the elevator. 5 minutes during lunch break. 3 minutes before bed. Just flipping cards on your smartphone changes the minimum unit of study from "sitting at a desk for 30 minutes" to "flipping one card." Making sure there are no zero days—this is the strongest weapon in self-study.

Weapon 3: Quizzes—Weekend Trials are Prepared in an Instant

Similarly, if you create a quiz in Studio, you can immediately get a short test from the materials.

If flashcards are for "remembering," quizzes are for "verifying." Once a weekend, solve a quiz for the range you did this week, and for the fields you got wrong, go back to the special training loop in Chapter 3 (Menu 3). This creates a beautiful cycle that prevents just memorizing and forgetting.

Mind maps go well with ear and finger learning. If you look at the range you listened to or flipped through as a mind map later, knowledge connects from "points" to a "map." Listen during the commute, flip in the gaps, and look at the diagram during lunch. Even on days you can't sit at your desk, you can move forward.

One note for those studying with lecture videos: Gemini Notebook only reads the "audio" of the video. It cannot read diagrams or slides shown on the screen. Treat videos as something to handle the lecture's narrative, and cover diagrams and tables with reference books.

And if you wonder "Is this true?" about an explanation or a card, click the source citation. The relevant part of the reference book will be highlighted. Read in text, listen in sound, flip in cards, and see in diagrams. By touching the same content in different forms many times, it stays in your memory much better than just re-reading. The busier you are, the more you should earn contact frequency with materials through a system.

Chapter 5: Three Promises for a Long Relationship with the Teacher

Finally, a talk about safety. There are only three things I want you to keep.

Promise 1: Do Not Share Notebooks Containing Materials with Others

Digitizing books you bought yourself is within the scope of private use. However, sharing a notebook containing the full text of a book with study buddies could be a copyright infringement. No matter how hard you work together, it's one notebook per person. If you want to share, teach them "how to make it in this article" instead of the notebook itself. By the way, sharing work notebooks made with internal company materials is not a problem. Commercial materials are a different story; keep that distinction.

Promise 2: Do Not Blindly Believe Grading and Explanations

The teacher is excellent, but final confirmation is a human job. For points that affect passing or failing, always click the source citation and verify with the original text of the reference book. Right before the exam, cross-reference with the official answers and the latest exam requirements from the organizer.

Promise 3: Do Not Keep Running with Old Materials

For certifications with many legal or system changes, the freshness of the materials is vital. Use the latest annual edition for reference books. Get amendment information from official announcements. Remember that the notebook's answers are the answers "at the time of the materials you put in."

As long as you keep these three, the teacher will be the strongest partner for certification study.

Summary: You Don't Have to Do Certification Study Alone from Today

There is only one thing I want to convey.

The reason study doesn't last is not a matter of willpower, but a matter of the design of doing everything alone. Teaching, questioning, grading, finding weaknesses. You break because you shoulder all these tasks alone. You should change the design and let the materials work for you. If you give them materials and a manual to raise them, the notebook will become your own dedicated teacher.
