TL;DR

This guide explains how to transform amateur AI-generated app interfaces into professional designs by using Mobbin UI references instead of vague text prompts.

"I'm making an app with AI, so why does mine look so tacky?"

If you've ever thought that, the cause isn't a lack of talent. It's because you're asking for design using only "words."

I'll say it clearly.

This isn't a problem of ability.

It's a problem of "how you hand it over."

※ Saving this article is recommended.

Many people ask AI like this:

"Make it a cool design."

"Give it a modern and stylish feel."

"Use a trendy UI."

But what comes back is always a safe, vague UI. Then you try to fix it with more words and get stuck in a loop. That's the cycle.

I was the same way.

The Day "A Chill Ran Down My Spine"

Three months ago, I built a task management app for myself using Claude Code. The functions worked perfectly. But the moment I opened the screen, I thought:

"Wow, this looks like an internal company system from 2010..."

The buttons were overly blocky. The margins were inconsistent. The color was a mysterious shade of blue. It worked, but I didn't want to show it to anyone. A chill ran down my spine.

"Just being tacky makes it look amateur instantly."

I felt that deeply. To be honest, the way I was asking back then was embarrassing. "Give it a sophisticated atmosphere like Apple." I was just listing abstract words that even I didn't fully understand. From the AI's perspective, there was no standard for "cool." That's why it only returned safe, mediocre UIs.

I understand that feeling well. You believe that if you just use enough words, it will get through. But that was the entrance to the swamp.

Relaxing with Just One Link

The turning point was discovering a certain site: Mobbin.

It's a site where you can see a massive amount of UI from apps that have actually been released. You can see Uber Eats and Netflix. Moreover, you can search by function, such as login screens, home screens, and payment screens. What you see here are real designs made by professional overseas designers.

To be clear, this isn't "stealing." It's the technique of "referencing" that professionals always do. What you mimic isn't the color or the logo, but the "layout philosophy."

The first time I pasted a link to the Netflix home screen and told the AI, "Please create this design by referencing this link"—that screen with the black background and movie thumbnails lined up—I was shocked.

When I saw the resulting screen, I involuntarily spoke aloud: "Wait, it did this already?"

Even though it was my app, it possessed that high-end feel of Netflix. The quality I couldn't reach after dozens of verbal requests was achieved in one shot with a single link. Before I felt happy, I felt a sense of exhaustion.

"What was all that time I spent worrying..."

Let's talk numbers:

  • Time spent worrying about design: From 2 hours to 10 minutes.
  • Number of re-dos: From 5 times to 1 time.
  • And the resulting level was overwhelmingly higher than before.

The time spent worrying decreased, and the quality increased. A complete reversal occurred.

Main Content | Practical Template for Using Mobbin

Here are the specific steps. All you do is "prepare a specification document and paste the Mobbin link there." Then just have Claude Code read it and build it.

Here is a prompt example:

text
1# App Overview
2- App Name: MyFit
3- One-sentence description: An app to quickly record workout logs
4- Target: 20s-30s who work out 2-3 times a week
5
6# Main Functions
7- Login / Sign up
8- Home (Display today's menu)
9- Training log input
10- History/Graphs to check progress
11- Profile / Settings
12
13# Design Reference
14Please refer to the UI of the following apps. I want the tone, margins, color scheme, and font usage to be close to this level.
15- Overall atmosphere: (Mobbin link)
16- Login screen: (Mobbin link)
17- Home screen: (Mobbin link)
18
19# Request
20Please propose a design policy based on the above before starting implementation.

Effect: The AI can share "what and at what level" to create from the start. Vague results disappear.

3 Tips to Make Accuracy Unbeatable

  1. Paste links for each screen separately. Don't just use one. Mobbin allows searching by function. Provide links separately for "Login is this" and "Home is this." Effect: The accuracy becomes significantly higher than providing just one bulk link.
  1. Add words about "what you want it to mimic." If you just paste a link, it might only pick up the colors. So, be explicit. Example instruction: "Please refer to the margin spacing, color scheme, and font usage." Effect: The AI won't miss the points it needs to look at.
  1. Don't let it build immediately; ask it to "propose a policy first." Align on the direction once. Example instruction: "Before implementation, please propose a design policy." Effect: Subsequent re-dos almost entirely disappear.

Answering "Isn't that just copying?"

When I recommend this method, I'm often asked: "Is it okay regarding copyright?"

I understand that concern. Please distinguish between these two:

◯ Things you can reference (Design "conventions"):

  • Layout patterns
  • Margin usage
  • Color scheme philosophy

✕ Things you must not take (Company-specific assets):

  • Logos / Brand names
  • Photos / Icons
  • Catchphrases

Bringing over a company's unique assets is a no-go. Replace those with your own app's assets. UI conventions and layout patterns are "templates" shared across the industry. Referencing templates is perfectly normal. If you're worried, just add a note to the AI.

Example instruction: "Reference the structure, but change the color scheme and logo to my brand."

This ensures it doesn't become a wholesale copy.

3 Pitfalls Beginners Fall Into

AI doesn't know where on the linked page to look. If you don't supplement it with "mimic this margin feel" or "use this tone," the result will be blurry.

If you provide several completely different tastes, the AI will take the average. As a result, you get something mediocre that looks like nothing. The trick is to narrow it down to 1-2 tastes.

Once the template comes out the first time, make fine adjustments while showing the same reference.

Example instruction: "Widen this margin a bit more" or "Make the button closer to the shape in this link."

With 2-3 rounds of this, it suddenly looks professional. Most people who give up saying "it doesn't look the same" just aren't doing this final polishing phase.

Can Mobbin be used for free?

For those thinking "I'll open it right now," here is an honest note on pricing. You can start using Mobbin by creating a free account (no credit card required). Free registration is required for viewing. In conclusion, the free version is more than enough for what you'll do today. With free registration, you can see the UI of Netflix and Uber Eats immediately. Copy the link of the screen you're interested in and give it to the AI. This method works entirely with that.

If you want to use it more deeply later, you can consider Pro then. For reference, these are the 4 main limitations of the free version:

  • You mainly see recently added apps (the full library is Pro).
  • The "Flows" function is heavily restricted.
  • Bulk downloading of multiple screens is Pro.
  • Collection saving is limited to 3.

These are things that matter after you're "hooked." For now, try pasting one screen for $0. If you want to use it seriously, it's unlocked with the paid Pro plan (around $10/month, billed annually). That's the stage we're talking about. Try it for free first. If it's not enough, consider paying. That's the right approach.

The Only Difference Between Those Who Are Good and Those Who Aren't

By reading this far, some of you must have realized. The difference isn't the "power to create." It's the "power to find."

Real work created by top-tier designers is scattered all over the internet. There's no need to squeeze something out from zero. Just find something good and give it to the AI.

Even at this moment as you think "I'll do it later" and close this page, someone else who read this is opening Mobbin. They are handing Netflix-level screens to AI. Tomorrow, that person's app will appear on your timeline. The difference isn't sense. It's whether you move or not in these 10 minutes.

Design sense is not a talent. It is the "action" of finding a good example and handing it over, which anyone can do.

Summary

  • Worrying time: "2 hours → 10 minutes." Re-dos: "5 times → 1 time."
  • The key is to provide reference screens by function and add words about "what to mimic."
  • Don't aim for perfection in one shot; polish it in 2-3 rounds while showing the same reference.

No long explanation is needed. There is only one thing to do. Open Mobbin, pick one screen from an app you like, and paste that link into the AI. Just by doing that, the screen you worried about for 2 hours will come out in 10 minutes.

Between the person who ends with zero and the person who does at least one. Which one will you be? You don't need "sense" anymore. The next time you show your app, the other person will peer into the screen and say:

"Wait, is this like Netflix...? Did you make this yourself...?"

You don't need talent. You just need one single Mobbin tab open today.
