TL;DR

An analysis of how sleep deprivation impairs financial judgment, using the case of a famous short-sleeper's market loss to highlight the necessity of rest for successful investing.

First, I want you to watch these crazy videos (with full subtitles).

You should be able to understand the importance of sleep.

A dialogue between Mikiya Takasu and Daisuke Hori, known as a short sleeper, was released on August 6, 2026.

The uncut 1 hour and 10 minute version is up on YouTube.

Plus, there's Valentine Hosokawa's YouTube video.

If you've seen it, you'll know this isn't just a simple controversy.

A few days before this dialogue, Mr. Hori streamed that he had lost his entire fortune in the market.

He was holding a high-leverage long position on USD/JPY on the night the yen broke from its 40-year low.

What I'm writing about today is that story.

Not just following the controversy, but a story about sleep and investment judgment.

The answer a sleep-deprived head comes up with is not your judgment.

It's an answer your sleep-deprived brain came up with on its own.

I once shaved years off my life because of that.

■ 1. This isn't an article to decide the 'correct' amount of sleep. It's about what happens when you touch the market with a sleep-deprived head.

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

First, I'll just lay out the facts in order.

・On the night of July 30, 2026, a sudden surge in the yen occurred.

・On July 31, it was revealed that Japan and the US had intervened in coordination. The yen strengthened further.

・Early morning on August 1, Daisuke Hori, known as a short sleeper, posted on X and streamed: "I've lost all my assets."

・On August 6, a dialogue between the two was released on Mikiya Takasu's YouTube channel.

Let me state my stance first.

I won't attack Mr. Hori.

But I don't agree with him either.

In fact, he says this himself:

・I am not forcing short sleeping on others.

・I want to break the fixed idea that you must sleep for 8 hours.

・Some people are fine with short sleep, while long sleep suits others.

I agree with the latter two points.

The assumption that you're no good unless you sleep 8 hours is indeed reckless.

I also think it's true that the required amount of sleep varies from person to person.

On the other hand, Mr. Takasu, from a doctor's perspective, said:

・Sleeping 30 minutes a day for many years is medically and statistically impossible. He called it a lie.

・It takes 7 to 9 hours for growth hormone secretion and to wash away fatigue substances accumulated in the brain.

・Short sleep leads to decreased concentration and increased anxiety.

・Congenital short sleepers make up less than 0.5% of the population.

・He opposes teaching this to minors, especially a 9-year-old child, as it negatively impacts growth.

With that in mind, I'll write my conclusion first.

I do not believe one can live a normal life on 30 minutes of sleep a day.

The talk about individual differences and the talk about 30 minutes are two different things.

The fact that the required amount varies by person and the idea that the lower limit drops to 30 minutes are completely different stories.

Just to be clear, this isn't a personal attack on Mr. Hori.

I have no way of verifying what is actually happening inside his body.

I'm just saying, "I don't think so."

Opinions and personality are separate things.

I'll put all the numbers in Chapter 3 as to why I think this.

To say one thing first, even people with genuine short-sleep genes sleep an average of over 6 hours.

I'm not a doctor, so I won't make a medical determination.

However, as someone who does investing, I couldn't treat this as someone else's problem.

This article isn't about forcing a 'correct' sleep time on everyone.

It's an article about what happens when you touch the market with a sleep-deprived head.

■ 2. What happened in the currency market on the night of July 30

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

First, let's organize the market situation.

On July 23, USD/JPY temporarily hit 163.988 yen.

A level of yen weakness not seen in about 40 years, since November 1986.

A week later, on the night of July 30, the incident occurred.

・USD/JPY, which was hovering around 162.78 yen,

・Plunged to 157.98 yen in less than an hour.

・A drop of about 4.80 yen.

The background was yen-buying/dollar-selling intervention by the government and the Bank of Japan.

The next day, July 31, it was revealed that Japan and the US had intervened in coordination.

By August 3, it hit 155.218 yen in the Tokyo market. It returned to the yen strength levels of early May.

In about 10 days, over 8 yen vanished from the 40-year low.

What's important here isn't the price range itself.

It's the single point that "a movement that has never happened before" occurred.

Mr. Hori was using a self-made AI automated trading program (a program where a computer automatically judges buying and selling).

He explained that he started development about 16 years ago and had been running it for the last 6 years.

(I wonder if it's really been 16 years? lol)

And that program had learned from the recent range-bound market.

He was holding a USD/JPY long (buy) position with high leverage.

Why does a program that learned a range die on a day like this?

To use an analogy, it's like this:

An examinee who perfectly memorized only the past 10 years of exam questions.

If the question is within that range, they solve it faster and more accurately than anyone.

That's why their mock exam results are always at the top.

But in the actual exam, a question appeared that wasn't mentioned in a single line of the textbook.

At that moment, not a single memorized answer can be used.

In a world without past questions, the honor students are the ones whose hands stop first.

The market is the same.

A program built on the premise that "it fluctuates within a 2-yen range" doesn't have data on intervention from a 40-year low level.

You can't anticipate what isn't there.

Moreover, a track record creates overconfidence.

According to his explanation, out of over 70 months of operation, there was only one month where he incurred a loss.

For nearly 6 years, almost no losses.

With this track record, people stop doubting the program.

And the reasons for failure he cited were these three:

1. Overconfidence in the system

2. Lack of carbohydrates

3. Deviation from risk management rules

The second point, lack of carbohydrates, refers to extreme weight loss just before a bodybuilding contest.

He was on an 800 kcal/day limit, and he explained that was the biggest factor depriving him of calm judgment.

And the third point.

Even though the program was supposed to be judging, he stepped in and layered on unnecessary operations.

He didn't execute the stop-losses he should have.

As a result, he ran out of margin and faced a forced liquidation.

This is the most important part today.

He says the cause of the loss was his "physical condition."

This isn't a story I'm deciding from the outside.

The person who lost is analyzing it that way himself.

Though I think it's sleep deprivation.

■ 3. A sleep-deprived brain cannot cut losses

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

From here, I'll talk about research, not my impressions.

First, the premise.

A constitution that is "satisfied with short sleep" does indeed exist.

A research team at the University of California, San Francisco, has identified genes involved in natural short sleep.

Four genes, five mutations.

Among them, the average sleep time of people who inherited a mutation in the DEC2 gene is 6.25 hours.

Another mutation called ADRB1 is found in about 4 out of 100,000 people.

In other words, even people with genuine short-sleep genes sleep in the 6-hour range.

There are indeed people who can get by with less due to their constitution.

But even for them, it's not 30 minutes.

My conclusion in Chapter 1 is partly based on this.

And here is today's critical point.

The first study.

A paper published in 2011 by Venkatraman et al. at Duke University.

If you don't sleep for a whole night, the brain's strategy in risk-taking situations shifts.

From a mode of preventing loss to a mode of pursuing profit.

Inside the brain, it looks like this:

・Activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (the part that reacts to profit) increases.

・The reaction of the anterior insula (the part that reacts to loss and applies the brakes) becomes dull.

In short, the accelerator is awake, but the brakes are dozing off.

What does this mean for an investor?

A sleep-deprived head cannot cut losses.

Cutting losses is the task of accepting the "pain of finalizing a loss."

When the sensor that feels that pain is dull, people don't press the stop-loss button.

Instead, they choose to "wait a little longer for it to return."

And then, they stack another position.

The second study.

A paper published in 2003 by Van Dongen et al. at the University of Pennsylvania.

They observed 48 healthy adults for 14 days, divided into four groups: 8 hours, 6 hours, 4 hours, and 2 hours of sleep.

As a result, the group that continued 6 hours of sleep for 14 days saw a drop in attention and working memory.

The level of that drop was the same as staying awake for two full nights.

And here's the scariest part.

The subjects themselves were not aware of strong sleepiness.

The people who say, "I'm fine with 6 hours," are often the ones who are broken when measured.

The essence of sleep deprivation is being unable to notice that you are broken.

The third study.

This is about the market as a whole.

A paper published by Kamstra et al. in 2000 in a journal of the American Economic Association.

They investigated the returns on the Monday following the daylight savings time switch in the US, UK, Canada, and German markets.

As a result, compared to the negative returns after other normal weekends, the negative return was 200% to 500% larger.

Just a 1-hour shift in the entire nation's sleep.

That alone makes a difference in market price movements.

It's not just a story about individuals, but about the market.

There is also Japanese research.

A paper published in 2013 by the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry.

They measured the brains of 14 healthy adult men after 5 days of 8-hour sleep and 5 days of 4-hour sleep.

During sleep deprivation, the activity of the left amygdala in response to fearful expressions became significantly larger.

The connection between the amygdala and the medial anterior cingulate cortex was also weakened.

This pattern is the same as that seen in patients with social anxiety disorder or depression.

If you don't sleep, anxiety is amplified.

Watching stock prices fall while anxiety is amplified.

You can imagine what happens.

Now, look at the environment for Japanese investors.

・The Tokyo Stock Exchange is 9:00 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 15:30.

・The Nikkei 225 Futures night session is 17:00 to 6:00 the next morning.

・US stock trading is 22:30 to 5:00 the next morning in summer (Japan time), and 23:30 to 6:00 in winter.

・US pre-market starts from 21:00 in summer, and after-hours are from 5:00 to 9:00 the next morning.

・FX is almost 24 hours on weekdays.

If you want to, an environment is prepared where you can be glued to the screen for 24 hours.

This intervention happened after 10:30 PM Japan time.

Moreover, Japan is the country that sleeps the least among developed nations.

In an OECD survey, Japan's average sleep time is 442 minutes. At 7 hours and 22 minutes, it's at the bottom.

There is about a 1-hour difference from the overall average of 8 hours and 24 minutes.

According to RAND Europe's estimates, the economic loss due to sleep deprivation in Japan is up to $138 billion per year.

About 15 trillion yen.

At 2.92% of GDP, it's the largest among the five countries surveyed.

The whole country isn't sleeping.

On top of that, individuals are plunging into markets that are open 24 hours.

By the way, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's "Sleep Guide for Health Promotion 2023" states that adults should aim to secure 6 hours or more.

However, this is a minimum guideline, not a recommended value.

Let me say this first: I'm not the type to be glued to charts.

I just buy spot stocks steadily and leave them alone.

If I have time to worry about price movements on a screen in the middle of the night, I sleep.

By the way, I've summarized today's content into a 5-page A4 report and am distributing it for free on my official LINE.

It includes things like sleep schedules by investment style and how to structure a week to build capital without sacrificing sleep—everything I couldn't fit in this article.

I'll explain how to get it at the end of the article, so please read to the very end.

And even I, writing so arrogantly, used to be completely on the side of not sleeping.

When I was 27 or 28.

I was trading Nikkei 225 Futures in the night session with high leverage.

I won at first.

I got cocky and increased the frequency.

Then I gambled on the employment statistics and it jumped in the exact opposite direction of my position.

Alone at home, facing the screen, I was screaming "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" lol

At midnight, all alone. I was completely out of my mind.

At 2 AM, when I tried to make an additional deposit, it had changed from Friday night to Saturday, and online banking wasn't working.

I walked to the nearby Lawson ATM and withdrew 1 million yen in five 200,000 yen installments to deposit it.

I still remember how cold my hands were, even though it was summer.

I didn't even sleep for 2 hours that day either.

During that period, I wasn't sleeping properly every night.

I'd wake up in the middle of the night worried about price movements.

In the morning, I couldn't eat.

I lost weight.

My performance at my day job dropped.

And then at night, I'd try to make it back again.

Because I wasn't sleeping, my judgment became sloppy; because my judgment was sloppy, I lost; and because I lost, I couldn't sleep again.

The way out of this loop was super simple.

I quit futures and slept properly. That's it. lol

Since then, for nearly 10 years, I've stuck to spot stocks.

I take time to choose stocks, build hypotheses, tear them down, and only buy things with high expected value.

I sleep properly at night.

I truly believe the reason I stopped losing isn't because I changed my method.

It's because I started sleeping.

■ 4. Going after a few thousand yen in the middle of the night is really not worth it

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

Let's talk about NISA here.

Suppose you scrimp and save to invest 30,000 yen every month.

That's 360,000 yen a year.

Assuming you manage this at 5% per year, the amount it increases in one year is about 8,300 yen.

・Enduring the heat without AC

・Reducing eating out

・Telling your kids, "Be patient this month"

・8,300 yen in a year

I'm not saying the system is bad.

NISA is a good system.

But if you use the system while your principal is small, the amount it increases will just be small.

Now, overlay today's theme onto this.

For that 8,300 yen, you're opening US stock charts at 2 AM.

And you're sacrificing the next day's work performance, your own brain, and time with your family.

Do you think it's worth it?

Before you fiddle with the yield, there's something to do.

・Strengthen your funding power, the seed money you put into investment.

・Add one more axis of earning outside of your salary.

A snowball is entirely determined by the size of the initial ball.

A person with 1 million yen in seed money vs. a person with 10 million yen.

Even if they make the same judgment in the same market, the amount they gain is 10 times different.

Besides, if you have an axis of earning outside your salary, your life won't be shaken even if stocks go down.

If your life isn't shaken, you don't have to try to make it back in the middle of the night.

You can sleep soundly and wait until a bargain appears.

In the end, the one who can wait is the one who buys cheap.

That quiet hour in the morning before your son wakes up.

Will you use that time to check the numbers in your account?

Or will you sleep a little longer next to your son who is still asleep?

I want to be on the side that can choose the latter.

■ 5. A way to earn that is completed only during waking hours

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

Voices will surely arise here saying, "Reselling is evil."

But the essence of business for hundreds of years has just been "buy low, sell high."

Wholesalers, retailers, supermarkets, convenience stores—they all work on this mechanism.

The ingredients you bought today weren't at cost price either.

Stocks are exactly the same.

Buy low, sell high.

Attacking reselling is the same as attacking your own stocks.

These are the three pillars I'm doing.

Rolex (The absolute favorite)

・Buy at list price at an authorized dealer and just pass it to a buyer for a profit of hundreds of thousands of yen.

・If a couple does it, it builds up normally over the year.

・If you hold it long-term, you can also get price appreciation. You can leave it as a cool asset for your son or grandson.

・Plus, it just makes you popular. lol

https://x.com/noirinvestor/status/2078450259706167390

https://x.com/noirinvestor/status/2073902978462031923

Pokemon Cards

・Procure new set boxes at list price through lotteries or stores.

・It's easy to get a plus even with an immediate sale, and even easier if you let it sit.

・There are plenty of rare singles that have turned into ten-baggers or more over the years.

・Unlike stocks, it's "popularity x finite." The price goes up as the number decreases.

https://x.com/noirinvestor/status/2079830649179906084

iPhone

・The classic resale: buy low and pass to a buyer.

・*However, profits are thin right now, so it's fine to restart after the iPhone 18 comes out.

・So for now, prioritize Rolex and PokeCa.

https://x.com/noirinvestor/status/2044583617230438631

https://x.com/noirinvestor/status/2043502084633567257

With these three, create an axis of earning 100,000 to 200,000 yen a month.

When you can create over 1 million yen in seed money in a year, the way you fight in stocks really changes.

And here is the biggest part regarding today's theme.

Reselling is completed only during the time you are awake.

Authorized dealers open during the day.

Lottery applications and shipping to buyers are all done during the day.

There is zero need to wake up for the New York market opening.

Looking at US stock charts at 2 AM, ruining the next day's work, dulling your judgment, and going after a few thousand yen.

Compared to that, using one hour during the day to make tens of thousands of yen is really faster.

Moreover, you can sleep properly at night.

Because you can sleep, you can read the next day's market news with a calm eye.

Specific methods for reselling can all be read for free from the rich menu on my official LINE.

I've put up articles on how to start with Rolex, PokeCa, and iPhone respectively.

■ 6. Why I'm so insistent on "deep sleep"

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

On days I haven't slept, I can tell by the sound of my heart in the morning.

Before I even get out of bed, my pulse is fast on its own.

My chest feels restless.

I think, "Ah, it might come today."

Usually, it does.

I was diagnosed with panic disorder at age 32.

Actually, I'd had symptoms since 7th grade.

I kept a lid on it with sheer willpower for nearly 20 years just because "it's uncool."

After my son was born, that lid blew off.

At age 34, I also got a diagnosis of depression.

To be honest, I still haven't accepted the depression part though. lol

So, on what kind of days were attacks more likely to occur?

Looking back, it's clear.

・Days I didn't sleep.

・Days I slept, but it was shallow.

These two.

During that period of futures hell I wrote about, I was only sleeping 3 to 4 hours every night.

I believe that lifestyle definitely exacerbated it.

I'm not a doctor, so I won't conclude that sleep was the cause.

However, this is what was actually happening in my body.

That's why I'm more insistent on the "depth" of sleep than the length.

These are the four things I do:

1. Don't just take a shower; soak in the tub.

2. Move your body moderately (it doesn't have to be intense weight training).

3. Eat properly. Don't skimp on nutrition.

4. Do something that calms your mind before bed.

There's one thing I want to warn you about here.

Alcohol.

There are so many people who say, "I can't sleep without drinking."

It's true you can fall asleep.

But alcohol lowers the quality of sleep.

You can't sleep deeply.

You think you're sleeping, but you're not.

This is the worst kind.

So, I want you to have at least one way to relieve stress other than alcohol.

In my case, it's playing with my son.

Running around like an idiot in the park for 30 minutes makes the work thoughts that were spinning in my head disappear beautifully.

And then at night, I naturally get sleepy.

Moving your body is fine.

Playing with your kids is fine.

Try to find something human.

And there's one more thing I want to write.

Mr. Hori says in his stream that the slander has exceeded 10,000 cases and it's tough.

I won't join that side.

Because I know what happens in the head of the person being hit when a crowd relies on numbers to punch one person.

As someone who has had their heart broken once, I will absolutely not do that.

Fighting over opinions and going to crush a person are two completely different things.

What I took home from this incident is just one thing.

Condition creates judgment.

・Sleep properly.

・Your head works.

・You can read the news with a cold eye.

・Stock selection doesn't waver.

・You don't rush the timing of buying and selling.

・Results come.

・You can sleep properly again.

When you get on this cycle, life really starts to turn around.

Conversely, if you don't sleep, everything rotates in reverse.

Investing is a job that uses a lot of brain energy.

If that's the case, sleep first.

I think the conversation starts after that.

Well, that's about it.

I don't care what people think, but this is how I'm living my life now.

■ 7. How to receive the special report

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

I've summarized today's content into a 5-page A4 report and am distributing it for free on my official LINE.

Here's what's in it:

・A timeline of how the currency actually moved on the night of July 30, and a checklist of conditions under which range-learning automated trading breaks.

・3 patterns of realistic sleep designs by investment style (people who only do Japanese stocks / people who also watch US stocks / people who do futures and FX). What time to sleep and what to give up.

・A one-week schedule to build seed money without sacrificing sleep (how to use 2 hours on weekday nights).

・Back-calculated actions for the first month of the three pillars of resale.

What pops up here again is "Information products are gross" or "LINE induction is suspicious."

Cram schools, prep schools, and English conversation schools are all respectable information products.

Even if their child fails their first choice, people don't sue the prep school for fraud.

Yet when it comes to information about money, it all suddenly becomes "fraud" or "suspicious."

Judge with your own head based on the content and the sender's track record.

If you can't do that, you'll get caught in scams and you won't be able to pick stocks.

By the way, after saying all this, my blog and articles are open for free. lol

First, read and verify with your own eyes.

The steps to receive it are these three:

1. Join my Open Chat (

https://noirstock.com/open

)

2. Register for the official LINE from the announcement section in the Open Chat (you can also read all the detailed articles on resale in the rich menu).

3. Send "Deep Sleep" to the official LINE.

With this, the special report will be delivered automatically.

■ 8. Finally

ノア|株式投資歴16年 - inline image

To everyone who has read this far, thank you very much.

I'll summarize what I wanted to convey today.

・On the night of July 30, the yen surged by about 4.80 yen in less than an hour from a 40-year low.

・Automated trading that learned range-bound markets becomes powerless the moment a movement with no past data arrives.

・And the person who lost cited "physical condition" as the cause of failure.

・A sleep-deprived brain becomes dull to loss and unable to cut losses (Venkatraman et al., 2011).

・Continuing 6 hours of sleep for 14 days drops you to the same level as two nights of total wakefulness. Moreover, there is no self-awareness (Van Dongen et al., 2003).

・Japan sleeps the least among developed nations, yet the market is open 24 hours.

Sleep is not a story outside of investment methods.

Sleep creates the judgment itself.

And let me write one more time about Mr. Hori.

I do not believe one can live a normal life on 30 minutes of sleep a day.

That hasn't changed from the beginning to the end of this article.

However, that's just my thought, and it's not a reason to attack someone.

Clashing opinions and going to crush a person are two completely different things.

I won't join the side that attacks.

I don't intend to change this until the end either.

Instead of being on the side that goes after a few thousand yen in the middle of the night and sacrifices the next day's head and time with family.

I truly hope you are on the side that creates an axis of earning during the day, sleeps properly at night, and can laugh while picking up bargains when they appear.

I'm especially happy if this idea reaches dads and moms in the middle of child-rearing.

The PDF can be received by the steps in Section 7, so please be sure to get it and look through it!

Receive the report from the announcement here (https://noirstock.com/open).
