BMKG recorded 118 shallow earthquakes in Bandung Regency between August and September 2026, attributed to unmapped local fault activity. The agency urges calm and directs residents to official channels for updates.

Regarding the earthquake sequence that occurred in the Bandung Regency area from August 11 to September 17, 2026, until 08:00 WIB, BMKG has recorded 118 seismic activities with magnitudes ranging from M1.0 to M3.4. Among these, 13 earthquakes were felt in Pangalengan, Talegong, Cisewu, and surrounding areas with an intensity of II-III MMI (vibration clearly felt inside houses, as if a truck passed by). Considering the epicenter locations, these are shallow earthquakes. BMKG's analysis shows that the earthquake epicenters form a linear pattern towards the southwest-northeast direction, approximately 5-8 km west of the Garsela Fault Kendang Segment and north of the Garsela Fault Kencana Segment. Tectonically, these earthquakes are related to local fault activity.

Referring to the 2024 Indonesian Earthquake Source and Hazard Map Book published by the National Earthquake Study Center (PuSGen), the distribution of these earthquakes is not located on the Garsela Fault Kendang Segment, Garsela Fault Kencana Segment, or Cicalengka Fault zones, but rather in an unmapped area. In this regard, further in-depth studies regarding the source of these earthquakes are needed.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) currently operates 35 seismic sensors spread across West Java. The presence of dozens of seismograph networks plays a crucial role because they can detect and record micro-earthquakes or small-magnitude quakes with "Good Enough" precision levels. These small-scale seismic activities generally originate from the movement of active faults along land faults stretching across West Java.

BMKG will continue to monitor earthquake activities and provide updated information to stakeholders and the public. We urge the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unaccountable rumors.
