Slab Nesting Software Compared: SlabOS, Stonify, Moraware, ActionFlow and SPS

This article compares five slab nesting software options (SlabOS, Stonify, Moraware CounterGo, ActionFlow, and SPS) based on their automatic layout capabilities, inventory integration, and suitability for different fabrication workflows.

A layout can look excellent on a screen and still leave the shop with a problem.

A waterfall relationship gets sacrificed to save space. A piece rotates against the intended vein. The leftovers occupy plenty of square footage but offer little useful material for the next job.

An automatic-nesting demonstration deserves scrutiny beyond whether the pieces turn green.

This comparison examines SlabOS, Stonify, Moraware CounterGo, ActionFlow and Stone Profit Systems through three separate questions: how they arrange countertop pieces, how the arrangement connects to inventory and estimating, and what remains to be verified before production can use it.

First decide what “better” means

Material efficiency, visual continuity and cutting practicality can pull a layout in different directions.

Saving a slab matters. So does keeping a visible seam acceptable to the customer. A remaining rectangle may be more valuable to the next job than several disconnected offcuts with the same total area.

A dense arrangement may require a production team to reconsider handling or the cutting sequence.

The buyer needs to decide which constraints are mandatory before comparing results. Otherwise, two attractive utilization figures can describe different jobs.

SlabOS: meaningful choices inside a connected workflow

SlabOS connects drawings, slab selection and pricing in its automatic slab-nesting workflow.

The supplied screenshots and read-only inspection strengthen the evidence beyond the public promotional material: there are distinct operating priorities and controls for adjusting the result.

The reviewed interface exposes four choices:

  • Veined material prioritizes related pieces and seam continuity, potentially sacrificing density to keep relationships together.
  • Tightest Fit favors denser placement, with greater freedom to rearrange or rotate pieces.
  • Fastest cutting, marked beta, adds a preference for aligned cut lines.
  • Cookie-cutter, marked beta, builds repeated layouts from matching existing pieces; remaining pieces can still require different layouts.

Piece spacing and slab-edge allowances are configurable. Users can move and rotate pieces, work with seams and protect an arranged slab with Lock layout during another run. SlabOS nesting guidance.

Those controls make the evaluation more interesting than a single Auto Nest button.

A repeated-unit shop can investigate whether repeating arrangements simplifies its work. A shop selling conspicuous veined material can examine what happens to related edges and strips when density becomes the priority.

The feature names should not become the verdict.

Tightest Fit does not establish a globally optimal solution. Fastest cutting does not establish measured cycle-time savings on your saw. Cookie-cutter does not promise that every slab in a mixed job will carry an identical pattern.

The convincing part is the ability to express competing priorities and retain operator control. How much that improves yield or total job time remains a demonstration question.

The slab photograph needs to mean something

SlabOS also supplies a searchable slab-image library. Its presence and use were corroborated in the supplied interface and source evidence. That is convenient for estimating and material presentation.

A library image still needs to be distinguished from a photograph of the exact physical slab reserved for a job.

Scaling a sample image to entered dimensions does not independently establish where the actual slab’s veins or defects lie.

For a production-oriented trial, use the stock slab’s dimensions and photograph. Check which material is selected, which quote holds it and whether the layout reflects that identity.

Remnants introduce another question.

Being able to search and select an offcut is useful. Automatically finding the best usable remnant across the entire inventory is a stronger claim, and that was not established by this review.

Stonify is a direct automatic-nesting competitor

Any current comparison needs to acknowledge Stonify’s Auto Nest functionality. Calling it simply a manual alternative would misdescribe the evidence.

Its July documentation describes automatic layout generation and optional generation of the required slabs using configured material dimensions. One-click slab nesting release.

Further documentation covers vein matching, rotation permissions and direction constraints.

Stonify explicitly explains that some pieces may fail to fit when their vein direction is locked. The operator can allow selected pieces to rotate, while pieces that remain unable to fit sit outside the slab. Vein-matching release.

That is an important distinction in a demonstration. A layout that respects a constraint and leaves a piece unplaced deserves different treatment from a layout that obtains a fit by relaxing the constraint.

September releases add Undo/Redo, remnant-dimension synchronization from Slabsmith or Horus, and more general attached-piece relationships.

Stonify therefore belongs beside SlabOS in a serious automatic-nesting trial.

Preservation of manually positioned or locked pieces through reruns was not established in the reviewed Stonify sources. Ask for the behavior to be demonstrated rather than treating the documentation gap as an absent feature.

Moraware: understand CounterGo’s intended job

Moraware’s products need to be named precisely.

CounterGo supplies drawing and quoting. Systemize supplies job management. Inventory is a separate product that requires Systemize. Product structure.

CounterGo documents seaming, rotation and manual arrangement of pieces on slabs. Its guidance explicitly describes the layout as an estimating tool rather than a cutting layout. Use Slab Layout.

That can be a sensible fit for a shop whose estimator wants to establish material requirements while a separate production workflow handles the final arrangement.

The distinction becomes consequential when a buyer expects the quote drawing to arrive at the next stage with substantially less rearrangement.

CounterGo also documents quantity multipliers that calculate slab requirements while showing a representative layout.

Buyers handling repeated work should establish how that differs from arranging every piece across the actual collection of slabs. Quote Multiple Quantities.

SlabOS has a concrete automation case against that documented manual estimating workflow. The size of the advantage depends on the estimator’s actual work and the handoff to production.

ActionFlow: layout connected to production operations

ActionFlow’s quoting guidance describes placing tops in Fabrication Layout, trying seams and adding slab inventory for slab-based pricing.

It also documents remnant inventory and a Slabsmith integration. Quoting guidance, inventory management, integrations.

That establishes useful links between the layout, material and quote. The reviewed materials did not establish a native automatic geometric optimizer.

An ActionFlow buyer should have the demonstrator explain which application performs each operation: arrangement, optimization, material selection, costing and export.

An integrated process can be valuable, but its external software and operator work need to be included in the evaluation.

Stone Profit Systems: nesting connected to material costs

SPS’s fabricator brochure documents seams and manual placement on dimensioned slabs, together with material quantities, costs and valued remnants.

Its Slabsmith data and image integration is documented separately. Fabricator brochure, Slabsmith integration.

The evidence supports an operator-arranged layout and costing workflow. It does not establish a native automatic optimizer.

For an operation with demanding purchasing and costing requirements, those connections can matter as much as the initial arrangement.

Require a demonstration of how layout changes affect material usage, the quote and remaining stock. Check what additional software is needed for the desired production workflow.

Follow the result through export

SlabOS documents DXF output for downstream CNC workflows.

A DXF drawing alone does not establish machine-ready cutting instructions. The receiving workflow still needs appropriate units, geometry, layers, tooling and machine setup. SlabOS CAD and DXF, Slabsmith DXF configuration.

Automatic defect exclusion and machine-specific allowances were insufficiently established across the reviewed products.

Native nesting DXF export for the four alternatives also remained unverified in this review. Have each vendor show the precise handoff you intend to use.

The buying verdict

SlabOS deserves a serious demonstration from shops spending substantial estimator effort arranging pieces and reconciling drawings, material and quotes.

Its specific case is connected automatic placement with useful operating priorities and manual control.

Stonify is the direct automatic-nesting challenger. A claim that SlabOS achieves better yield requires identical jobs, slabs and constraints in both systems. This review provides no such benchmark.

CounterGo remains relevant to shops satisfied with a manual estimating layout.

ActionFlow and SPS warrant consideration where layout is one part of a broader production or financial system. Existing workflows and integration costs belong in the decision.

Use the same job in each finalist. Fix the seams, direction rules, spacing and actual available material before starting.

Record slab count, usable leftover shapes, operator time and corrections through export. If a mode promises easier cutting, measure setups and machine time separately.

The strongest demonstration produces a result the estimator can explain and the production team can use.

Make every vendor show how it gets there.
