This guide outlines ten behaviors to avoid to maintain true class, emphasizing that character, humility, and respect for others are far more important than wealth or social status.

Class has very little to do with money. It isn’t determined by the car you drive, the neighborhood you live in, the watch on your wrist, or the logo that’s on your clothes. Some of the classiest men (or women) you’ll ever meet live simple lives, while some of the wealthiest people in the world have very little class at all.

True class is revealed through someone’s character. It’s found in the way a man treats other people, carries himself under pressure, speaks to strangers, and responds when life doesn’t go his way. A classy person doesn’t seek attention or applause through their actions. Even if they don’t intend to, their actions earn respect from others.

Despite what some may say, class is not something you’re born with. It is cultivated through one’s intentional habits and daily choices. Likewise, those choices can reveal a lack of class as well. Here are ten things classy men simply never do.

1. Never Brag

Classy men let their accomplishments speak for themselves. Whether they’ve achieved professional success or had some amazing experiences, they don’t feel the need to constantly remind everyone around them. When men seek validation by sharing their accomplishments, it reveals their insecurity. A truly confident man doesn’t need constant validation from others.

The “humble brag” has become a common occurrence on social media the last several years. While it’s understandable that men might be proud of their accomplishments or promotions, to broadcast it across social media speaks volumes. You are telling others that you need them to like your post or congratulate you. You are screaming for validation. A gentleman understands that people are far more impressed by humility than by self-promotion. He would rather earn admiration naturally than demand it through a post.

2. Never Embarrass Someone in Public

Few things reveal character faster than how a man handles another person’s mistake. When someone spills a drink, forgets a name, or makes an honest error, a classy man doesn’t mock them or draw unnecessary attention to the situation. Instead, he quietly helps preserve their dignity. I'm doing so, he preserves his dignity as well.

To exploit someone’s mistake or draw attention to it for laughs, is the act of a schoolyard bully. Even genuine criticism should be withheld in public. Conversely, seek ways to compliment or praise others in public. A true gentleman builds up others in public; he doesn’t embarrass them. As I was taught as a leader in the Army, one should always praise publicly and correct privately. It works in the military, but it also works in friendships, marriages, and professional relationships.

3. Never Mistreat Service Workers

One of the clearest indicators of character is how a man treats people who have nothing to offer him. Unfortunately, the internet is awash with videos of men (and women) who excoriate service workers in an attempt to get their way or prove their social superiority. Whether speaking with a waiter, hotel clerk, cashier, janitor, or an airline employee, classy men remain courteous and patient. It doesn’t matter the situation, everyone deserves your respect, regardless of their occupation.

Anyone can be polite to a CEO or someone in power. Your true character is revealed in how you treat the person clearing your table or driving your cab. It doesn’t take much to show respect and kindness. Doing so is not only good for their well being, it is good for your well being as well.

4. Never Gossip

Few things are more revealing than a grown man speaking ill about someone who isn’t in the room. Classy men protect reputations, the don’t try to destroy them. They refuse to participate in conversations that revolve around tearing others down or criticizing people who aren’t present to defend themselves.

If you wouldn’t say something about another man to his face, don’t say it behind his back. When you gossip you not only make yourself look weak, you lose the trust and confidence of others as well. If you feel the urge to say something about another man, keep it to yourself, and if others do so, politely change the subject to a more positive topic.

5. Never Lose Your Composure

It doesn’t matter who you are, life is filled with frustrating people and unexpected disappointments. Inevitably, you end up in traffic and your flights are delayed. People will be rude and inconsiderate. Whatever it may be though, classy men don’t allow every inconvenience to dictate their mood or behavior.

Self-control is one of the greatest demonstrations of strength. Staying calm when everyone else is losing their composure will get you more respect than losing your temper. The same goes with dealing with others who are throwing a temper tantrum or seeking an argument. Don’t let them draw you into their orbit of negativity, and keep your composure.

6. Never Dress Carelessly

Looking presentable isn’t about vanity or showing superiority. It’s about demonstrating respect for yourself and the people around you. Classy men don’t need expensive clothes or three piece suits, but they do make an effort. Their clothes are appropriate, their shoes are clean, and their grooming shows attention to detail.

Appearance isn’t everything, but it’s often the first impression you make on others. Yes, there will be times you must leave your house unexpectedly and may be less than dressed for an outing. However, if you are going out of your house, step it up a bit and present the best version of yourself to the rest of the world.

7. Never Dominate the Conversation

There is no doubt about it, the most interesting people are usually the best listeners. Classy men ask thoughtful questions, they remember details about other people, and they show genuine curiosity about others. They don’t feel compelled to tell the longest stories or prove they’re the smartest person in the room. And they certainly don’t “one-up” the stories of others.

People may forget what you said, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. When you show sincere interest in people and ask them questions about themselves, they know you care. Resist the temptation to talk about yourself or your experiences unless asked. Doing so will ensure you are seen as a great conversationalist.

8. Never Make Excuses

Everyone makes mistakes, it’s just part of life. The difference is what happens after the mistake. Instead of blaming circumstances or other people for a mistake, classy men accept responsibility for their actions.

They apologize when necessary and move forward without making excuses. They also learn from their mistakes and get better as a result. Accountability is one of the truest forms of confidence. When you screw up, own it. Doing so will earn the respect of others.

9. Never Think They Know Everything

One of the quickest ways to look insecure is to act like you have all the answers. Some men feel compelled to correct everyone around them or offer an opinion on every subject. This is an epidemic on the internet today, as people try to show how smart they are by offering unsolicited feedback and correcting strangers. Of course, this often communicates the opposite of confidence. Truly knowledgeable people are humble and understand how much they still have to learn.

A classy man remains curious throughout his life. He reads books, asks thoughtful questions, seeks advice from mentors, and isn’t afraid to admit when he doesn’t know something. Humility is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it’s one of the clearest marks of wisdom and confidence.

10. Never Value Image Over Character

There’s no doubt that modern culture puts a lot of emphasis on appearances. Social media encourages carefully curated lifestyles designed to impress strangers. While it may look real, it is usually entirely fabricated and meant to build the image of class. Of course, these appearances are nothing more than a performance.

A classy man knows that integrity matters far more than popularity. He strives to be the same person behind closed doors as he is in public. His reputation is built on honesty and strength, not just appearances. There is no need to post every aspect of your life to the world. Even if you are having five star experiences, keep it to yourself.

Conclusion

Class isn’t about money and it isn’t inherited. It’s built one decision at a time through humility, discipline, kindness, integrity, and respect for other people. Notice that none of these qualities require wealth or status. Every one of them is a choice. Each day gives us new opportunities to listen instead of interrupting, encourage instead of gossiping, remain composed instead of losing your temper, and accept responsibility instead of making excuses for your actions.

No matter who you are, every one of us has room to grow. The goal isn’t to be perfect, it’s about always improving and refining ourselves. Becoming a gentleman (or a lady) is a lifelong pursuit, and the classiest people are often those who never stop improving. If any aspect of this article resonates with you, take it as an opportunity to get better. True class is available to us all, if we have the humility to act.
