⚠️ Application Countdown Warning!!!
I think this German Vodafone SIM card is the kind where if you don't apply, you'll definitely lose out and regret it. Its cost is inhumanly low—as little as 0.3 RMB per year. If you don't apply, this deal might be gone by next week.
Previously, I shared how to get Hong Kong and Netherlands numbers, but some friends asked: "Can we get something even better?"
Well, here it is—the German Vodafone eSIM.
⏱️
Estimated Process Time: From application to activation, the whole process takes about 20 minutes if smooth, and no more than 24 hours if you encounter issues. Filling out the form and KYC certification takes 10-20 minutes; the main wait is for official approval (usually 10 minutes to 24 hours). Apply early before policies tighten!

This is the most detailed tutorial to date, covering everything from registration to KYC steps, account binding, and top-up maintenance. Every step includes detailed text and screenshots. Please follow carefully to avoid errors.
1. Why German Vodafone?
To be honest, this card is amazing. Here are a few reasons:
1. 0 Activation Fee + 0 Monthly Rent
The monthly maintenance cost can be as low as 0.01 Euro, meaning the annual cost is less than 1 RMB. It's basically free. Apply as soon as possible during this window.
And you read that right. This card is completely free to apply for, with no activation fees or monthly rent. This is the most generous European (or even global) SIM card I've seen.
2. Major Carrier Background, High Authority
Vodafone is a top-tier global telecom operator. This is a physical mobile number, not a virtual one. It has networks in 27 European countries. It has a very high success rate for registering ChatGPT, Telegram, WhatsApp, and various bank accounts, unlike virtual operators that are often flagged.
3. Extremely Low Maintenance Cost
Although it's a free card, keeping it active is simple. Any balance change every 180 days extends its life. If you have European payment tools like Wise, a 5 Euro top-up can last years, or you can use Wise/N26 to transfer 0.01 Euro periodically.
4. Free SMS Roaming in China
You can receive verification codes in China for free. It roams on China Mobile or China Unicom signals without needing a VPN or manual roaming activation.
5. Supports Chinese Mainland Phones
With card writers like XeSIM, Chinese mainland iPhones can also use eSIM. I use a mainland iPhone 16 Pro Max + XeSIM, and it works perfectly.
2. Real-world Test Results:
- Telegram: Instant verification code, successful registration.
- WhatsApp: Instant receipt, stable.
- ChatGPT: Registration works.
- WeChat: Can be bound (suggest using a secondary account).
- N26 Bank: Registration possible (requires European address).
3. Are There Any Catches? Is It Reliable?
You might think: "This sounds too good to be true."
Conclusion: It is currently a 'free-ride' period, but policies can change at any time. Many bloggers have recommended this card recently.
It's said that this free eSIM project is intended to promote eSIM technology and attract users. However, European regulations on prepaid cards are tightening. My advice: Get on board while it's still free!
As for reliability, Vodafone is a top-three global operator; the risk of them disappearing is zero.
4. Must-Read Before Opening! Preparation
You will need:
✅ Passport
- German Vodafone requires KYC (Know Your Customer) verification.
- You must use a passport; ID cards are not supported.
- To receive the eSIM QR code and account info.
✅ eSIM-Compatible Phone
- Overseas iPhone/Pixel/Samsung work directly.
- Mainland China Phone Users: You need a card writer like XeSIM or ESTK (highly recommended).
✅ Foreign Currency Payment Tool (Optional, only for maintenance)
- Visa/Mastercard credit card.
- Or virtual cards like Wise or Bybit Card.
5. Physical Card or eSIM?

Physical Card: Requires a German address for delivery, not suitable for users in China.
eSIM (Highly Recommended): Online application, instant activation, no shipping needed. Works with XeSIM on mainland phones.
6. Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Apply for Free eSIM
Open the official German Vodafone application page:
https://www.vodafone.de/freikarten/callya-classic-form/
Select the eSIM option.
A. Fill in Personal Information:
- Name (use Pinyin, matching your passport).
- Email (Do not get this wrong! The QR code goes here).
- German Address (Find a real German address on Google Maps).

B. Enter the verification code received via email:

C. Set Customer Password

⚠️ Note: The password must be all uppercase letters + numbers.
Step 2: KYC Verification
After submitting, the system will ask for KYC. Choose "Auto-identification + Selfie" (the easiest way).

When you see this page, download the app and scan the QR code to start.
- Select Passport.
- Photograph the passport cover.
- Photograph the bio page.
- Photograph the inner pages from different angles as instructed.
- Face recognition (record a video moving your head).
Takes about 5-10 minutes. Wait for approval.

Step 3: Receive eSIM QR Code
After approval (10 mins to 24 hours), you will receive three emails. The third one contains a PDF with your eSIM info.

Open the PDF (password is the uppercase one you set). It contains:
- eSIM QR Code
- Phone Number (+49 xxx)
- 25-digit Activation Code
- 6-digit PIN (Important!)

Step 4: Download eSIM to Phone
For Overseas Phones: Settings -> Cellular -> Add eSIM -> Use QR Code.
For Mainland China Phones (using XeSIM):
- Insert XeSIM card.
- Use XeSIM App to scan the QR code and copy the activation code.
- Go to Settings -> Cellular -> [XeSIM Card] -> SIM Applications -> XeSIM -> Download eSIM -> Paste code -> Send. Wait 30s for success.

Step 5: Activate eSIM
Enter the PIN code from the PDF. Once successful, you should see "Vodafone.de" signal (roaming on China Mobile/Unicom).
Important: Turn off "Data Roaming" to avoid high fees.
7. Registering a Vodafone Account
Register at https://www.vodafone.de/meinvodafone/ to check balance and validity.

8. Maintenance Strategy: 0.3 to 9 RMB per Year
Rule: Balance change every 90 days extends validity by 90 days.
Option A: Send an SMS
Cost: ~€0.29 per SMS. 4 times a year = ~9 RMB.
Option B: Top up
Top up €5 to extend for a long time.
Option C: Wise/N26 Auto-transfer (The Ultimate Solution)
Transfer €0.01 every few months. Annual cost: ~0.33 RMB.

9. Pitfall Guide
- Pitfall 1: Turn off Data Roaming! Roaming data is extremely expensive.
- Pitfall 2: KYC requires good lighting and a steady hand.
- Pitfall 3: Don't forget to maintain the balance or the number will be recycled.
- Pitfall 4: Don't use it for calls; it's too expensive.
10. Cost Summary
- Activation: €0
- Monthly Rent: €0
- Maintenance: ~9 RMB/year (SMS) or ~0.33 RMB/year (Wise transfer).
Compared to Hong Kong Club Sim or Netherlands Vodafone, this is the only one with 0 activation fee.
Final Reminder: Get on Board!
I don't know how long this free eSIM project will last. European regulations are getting stricter. Apply now while it's free!
