This article argues that UFO disclosures should not cause theological panic, suggesting that God's sovereignty extends across the cosmos and that aliens could even be part of a larger divine plan.

UFOs Shouldn’t Threaten Your Faith

The latest wave of UFO/UAP disclosures and congressional hearings has sent some evangelical circles into unnecessary panic. Pastors warn that confirmed intelligent extraterrestrial life could collapse the Genesis account, prove humanity is not special, and trigger a mass exodus from the faith. “If there are other creations in the galaxies,” one prominent voice claims, believers might conclude “the whole creation story is a myth.”

This hand-wringing is theologically shallow and betrays a small view of God. A robust faith, grounded in Scripture, has nothing to fear from rational beings on other worlds. The sovereign Creator of the universe is not threatened by the size of His creation.

Scripture Never Limited God to One Planet

The Bible never claims Earth is the only place with life, let alone the only place with rational life. “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1). “By Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible” (Colossians 1:16). The focus of Scripture is God’s redemptive plan for humanity made in His image, fallen in Eden, redeemed at Calvary. It is not a scientific textbook listing every form of life God ever made.

Christianity and Judaism have already survived Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Darwin. Each time, the faithful refined their understanding of the physical world, but core doctrines remained unshaken. The same will hold if sentient aliens are confirmed. The resurrection of Christ does not stand or fall on whether we are alone in the cosmos.

Eternity in Their Hearts-Even Among the Stars

Don Richardson’s classic Eternity in Their Hearts https://a.co/d/09AnX8dOdescribes a powerful recurring historical pattern: across vastly separated human cultures and eras, often with zero contact, people independently attained or retained awareness of one supreme God. Richardson calls these “redemptive analogies,” traces of truth that God sovereignly preserved to prepare people for the gospel.

One powerful example is the Cretan philosopher Epimenides. When a plague struck Athens, around 596 BC, the Athenians had already sacrificed extensively to all their known gods and idols, but the plague persisted. Desperate, they consulted the Oracle at Delphi, which instructed the city to be purified and a ship to be sent to summon Epimenides. He devised a strategy,  using reasoning that rested on humility and logic. The plague’s persistence proved that the known pantheon of gods was insufficient. Therefore, an overlooked or unknown power must be at work. Implicit in the reasoning is that the deity must be more powerful than all of the other deities, capable of resisting their collective will, if they possessed any will or power at all. Rather than guessing the name of this power (which risked offending it), Epimenides concluded that the Athenians should openly confess ignorance and humility, and let the powerful deity itself choose the place to accept the offering. To make the deity's sign unmistakable, Epimenides specified that healthy sheep be released early in the morning when they were hungriest (so lying down would be unnatural and thus divinely prompted), and directed that the sheep that lay down be prepared.

Altars were erected bearing the inscription “To an Unknown God,” and the selected sheep were sacrificed. Athens was delivered from plague, and the curious altars remained. This is an actual historical event, aspects of which are evidenced by the writings of Diogenes Laertius (Lives of Eminent Philosophers, Book 1, §110 – written c. 3rd century AD) (the most detailed and frequently cited source of the narrative), Plutarch, Pausanias, Plato (Laws 642d), and Aristotle.

Centuries later, the Apostle Paul stood on that very spot on Mars Hill and declared: “What you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you” (Acts 17:23). The prepared soil yielded a harvest.  Greeks were converted to Christianity. The account is considered evidence of God’s preparatory work among all the peoples He created.  It is also not lost on believers that Epimenides was "of a type," similar to great prophets like David and Moses, both in their wisdom and in their being overlooked or underestimated; the slur "Cretan" has survived into modern times because Cretans were considered brutes. Titus 1:12. The most learned scholars and religious leaders of Athens were humbled to summon the Cretan.

Three Possibilities for Rational Aliens

If intelligent, rational extraterrestrial life exists, and discovering such beings is what actually counts (far beyond identifying mere microbes), the same divine pattern would logically extend beyond Earth:

  1. Alien civilizations may have their own past relationship with a monotheistic God, like isolated human cultures that retained a memory of the Creator. Just as God left among remote tribes “eternity in their hearts” (Ecclesiastes 3:11), He could have done so among aliens. Their philosophers, too, may have reasoned to an “unknown God” long ago.
  1. They may currently possess a living monotheistic faith. Nothing in Christian or Jewish doctrine requires Earth to be the only planet where intelligent beings worship God. Finding aliens who already acknowledge a supreme Creator would not threaten Christianity; it would confirm it. The God of the Bible would simply prove larger and more consistent than our small expectations.
  1. It may be part of God’s sovereign plan for humans to bring aliens the full revelation. Just as God prepared the Greeks through Epimenides, and then later sent Paul, and the disciples spread the gospel to the gentiles of the world, God could prepare other worlds and then send redeemed humanity as His messengers. Earth’s possibly unique role in salvation history, home of the Incarnation, does not diminish God’s ability to use humans as carriers of truth to the rest of creation. We could be the Paul standing on their version of Mars Hill.

In every case, though, the discovery strengthens rather than weakens the biblical worldview. The same God who scattered redemptive analogies across continents can scatter them across galaxies.

The Necessity of Real Discernment

Some UFO phenomena may indeed be spiritual, demonic deception, or end-times delusion rather than extraterrestrial beings or hardware. Scripture warns of strong delusions and calls us to “test the spirits” (1 John 4:1). Regardless of whether the beings are biological, interdimensional, or something else, the theological answer remains the same: they are creatures. They do not dethrone the Creator.

Christians should neither cower nor adopt a siege mentality. The God who parted the Red Sea, raised the dead, and conquered the grave does not tremble at the prospect of advanced civilizations elsewhere. If disclosure comes, let it fill us with greater awe at the majesty of the One who “created all things” and sustains them by the Word of His power.

Stand firm. Your faith is not fragile. It is built on the rock of He who made the stars and everything, visible and invisible, that may dwell among them. The heavens still declare His glory. And they may declare it more loudly and profoundly than we ever imagined.
