This article examines five primary models explaining the universe's fine-tuning, including deeper physical laws, the multiverse, cyclic cosmology, simulation theory, and divine creation.

The emergence of humanity required an extraordinarily long sequence of interconnected events: suitable values of the fundamental physical constants, the formation of stable atoms and chemical elements, followed by the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets, the origin of life, its evolution over billions of years, and the appearance of complex organisms, of intelligence, and, finally, of human civilization. Each of these links depended on a multitude of conditions, and a change in many of them could have rendered the emergence of humanity impossible.

This is precisely why the origin of the fine-tuning of the Universe --- the totality of physical laws and parameters that permit the existence of complex matter, life, and intelligence --- remains one of the greatest unsolved problems of modern science and philosophy.

Despite the multitude of particular hypotheses, most existing explanations can be reduced to five fundamental worldview models. They differ in what is taken to be the ultimate source of the laws of nature and the cause of the existence of our Universe.

1. Deeper Fundamental Laws of Nature

Perhaps modern physics has not yet discovered the most fundamental laws of reality. In that case, the values of the physical constants would prove to be not accidental, but a natural consequence of a deeper structure of the world. Life, complex matter, and intelligence would then be not the result of an improbable coincidence, but a natural manifestation of as yet unknown laws of nature.

2. The Multiverse and the Anthropic Principle

If there exists an infinite multitude of universes, or of other cosmic structures with differing physical parameters, then among them worlds hospitable to life inevitably arise. We observe precisely such a Universe not because it is unique, but because only under such conditions can observers exist. In this model, fine-tuning is explained not by the distinctiveness of our world, but by the vast diversity of worlds.

3. Cyclic Cosmology

If reality passes through an infinite succession of cosmic cycles of the birth and death of universes, then the physical parameters may be reproduced, or gradually take shape, in the course of these cycles. Yet such models themselves require an explanation of the origin of the laws of nature that govern these cycles.

4. The Artificial Creation of Our Reality by Superintelligent Civilizations

Our Universe may be either a physically created world or a highly realistic simulation produced by an exceedingly advanced civilization. Yet this hypothesis merely shifts the principal question to the next level: how did these civilizations themselves arise? Their origin, too, must be explained by one of the other fundamental models.

5. Creation by an Absolute Mind

According to the religious-philosophical tradition, space, time, the physical laws, and the very possibility of the existence of the world are the result of a creative act of an unknowable Absolute Mind. This hypothesis lies beyond the methods of natural science and belongs, above all, to the domain of metaphysics.
