One photo is all it takes. It reads the face, gaze and bearing, turns them into a fixed "soul fingerprint", and resolves that fingerprint into exactly one past life: a court lady or prince of a specific dynasty, a merchant-house matriarch or heir, or something that was never human — a phoenix, a white peacock, a lioness, a tiger, a golden dragon. Which form you get varies from person to person, but it is never re-rolled: the same face always resolves into the same past life, only ever redrawn from a different angle or in a different style.
