Wall Street Is Buying Privacy in Public

TL;DR

Zcash led crypto privacy gains in 2026, yet institutional buyers via ETFs hold transparent coins, failing to utilize shielded features. This creates a structural paradox where privacy adoption lags behind price speculation.

Privacy is the best-performing crypto sector of 2026, and Zcash is most of it. The money that carried ZEC into the top 10 came through an SEC-registered ETF, a Nasdaq treasury company and a $100 million check from the fund's own parent.

On September 8, 2026, a press release went out from Stamford, Connecticut. DCG International Investments, a subsidiary of Grayscale's (@Grayscale) parent Digital Currency Group, had handed 85,705.32563297 ZEC to the Zcash ETF through an Authorized Participant. About $100 million. The fund, ticker ZCSH, had crossed $500 million two weeks after its NYSE Arca debut, and the largest single ticket came from inside the building.

Zoom out. ZEC traded near $50 in September 2025. As of October 24 it is $1,218.56, ranked tenth on CoinGecko with a $20.7 billion market cap (my math: 1,218.56 / 50 ≈ 24x). Glassnode (@glassnode) data as of September 6 made privacy the only top-200 sector still trading 213% above Bitcoin's October 2025 high, a $33.6 billion sector of which ZEC is about 62%.

Here is the tension. Zcash's pitch, in the words of Bankless co-founder David Hoffman (@TrustlessState), is that "Bitcoin is no longer rebellious. The vibes aren't really cypherpunk anymore." ZEC is where that premium is supposed to go. But the 2026 bid is being expressed through the most public plumbing in crypto.

The Public Bid

ZCSH is a nine-year-old Grayscale trust that started trading on NYSE Arca on August 25. It charges 2.5% and keeps its ZEC at Coinbase Custody. Much of its growth is price, not flows: Grayscale's Steve Vanourny counted "cumulative inflows of more than $70 million in the two weeks since launching as an ETP," next to the $100 million from DCG.

Then the flows turned. Crypto Briefing counted $93.56 million of redemptions in a single week around the turn of October, as ZEC slid from a late-September high near $1,680 to $1,051.50 on October 18-19. SoSoValue data cited by AMBCrypto put net assets at $649.65 million on October 20.

The second wrapper is Cypherpunk Technologies (@cypherpunk), the Winklevoss-backed Nasdaq company that held 323,394 ZEC, about 1.92% of supply, as of August 18. On October 6, Winklevoss Asset Services filed for a second ETF, WINK, at a 0.25% fee. One line in that draft S-1 gives the game away: the trust does not expect to participate in coinholder polls, because voting requires holding shielded ZEC in a self-custodied wallet.

The marginal buyer of the privacy coin is a brokerage account, and a brokerage account cannot hold shielded ZEC.

Worked example: put $10,000 into ZCSH and you pay $250 a year for ZEC's price. You get none of its privacy. Your coins sit in a regulated custodian's vault, and your position is disclosed in SEC filings.

What Is Actually Private

The shielded pool is where the thesis lives, and it is growing. As of October 23, ZEC Stats shows 4.96 million ZEC shielded, 29.2% of supply, up from about 11% at the start of 2025 per Coin Metrics.

The path was not smooth. In late May, Shielded Labs researcher Taylor Hornby found a flaw in the Orchard pool that could have allowed counterfeit ZEC. The price fell more than 50%, shielded balances dropped from 5.18 million ZEC in April to 4.27 million in July, and a soft fork and a hard fork on June 2 and 3 patched it. Ironwood, a new formally verified pool with a supply "turnstile," went live on July 28. Josh Swihart (@jswihart) of ZODL: "Orchard was fixed in 5 days and replaced in 60."

Zcash's privacy is real, audited and growing, and it is still a minority position inside its own chain. About 12 million ZEC, 71% of supply, is transparent (my math: 17.0M − 4.96M). That is the pool the ETFs, the treasury company and the exchanges draw from.

Two Clocks

The first is NU7. Its activation height, block 3,543,405, shipped in Zebra 7.0.0 on October 22 and lands around November 6 (my math: 15,106 blocks × 75 s ≈ 13.1 days from October 23). It cuts block time from 75 to 25 seconds, removes 60% of each block's fees from circulation for later reissuance, and invalidates the only transaction format that can move coins out of the original Sprout pool, so funds remaining in the Sprout pool become unspendable. Sprout held 22,263 ZEC on October 23, roughly $27 million (my math: 22,263 × 1,218.56).

The second is Brussels. ZCSH's own prospectus warns that EU legislation will "heavily restrict the use of privacy-preserving tokens." CCN, via Yahoo Finance, reports that Regulation 2024/1624 applies from July 10, 2027 and bars regulated platforms from supporting anonymity-enhancing coins, naming Monero, Zcash and Dash.

The rule that can hurt Zcash is written for intermediaries, and intermediaries are exactly who showed up in 2026.

The bull steelman is rotation. Bitwise's Matt Hougan (@Matt_Hougan): "As suitcoiners drag bitcoin into the mainstream, it makes space for things like ZEC." ZEC is about 1.3% of Bitcoin's market cap today (my math: $20.7B / $1,630B). Hoffman made the same case on September 23:

https://x.com/TrustlessState/status/2102787878552015357

The bear steelman is CoinShares' Luke Nolan: "ZEC is, in most respects, a worse Bitcoin," with privacy that is opt-in, so the anonymity set is far smaller than the cryptography allows.

The Bottom Line

  • Reflexivity: ETF assets rose with price and fell with it.
  • Concentration: The trust, Cypherpunk and the second ETF all sit on the transparent side of the chain.
  • Regulation: July 10, 2027 hits the exchanges and custodians that made 2026 possible.

Both camps are right about different layers. At the shielded layer, Zcash shipped an emergency fix and a new pool in two months while the private share of supply kept climbing. At the ticker layer, the privacy trade is a 2.5%-fee instrument that holds transparent coins and gets sold on a bad week.

I would own the KPI, not the wrapper. The number to watch is not ZCSH's daily flow; it is whether 29% becomes 50%.

Privacy is winning. It is just not the thing being bought.
