Preface
AI will definitely disrupt current education.
When learning English and memorizing vocabulary, we often encounter the following problems:
- When using paper word books, it's easy to remember the definition along with its position on the page because paper books can't automatically shuffle words. (Put "truth" on the screen)
- When using paper word books, you have to look at the book while checking pronunciation on an electronic device because paper books don't allow "click where you don't know".
- When using apps to memorize words, although they solve the shuffling and pronunciation issues, the workflow isn't flexible enough. For example, sometimes I answer correctly but want to review more times, yet I can't.
- When using paper books or apps, they usually only show the core definition and one example sentence for that definition. But a word may have multiple definitions, each needing an example sentence.
- When writing, we often need "advanced vocabulary" (though I don't approve of ranking words by prestige), but there's hardly any place summarizing common synonyms or near-synonyms for advanced expression.

I thought of these in high school, but back then I didn't have enough programming skills or English proficiency to implement this idea. But in the AI era, I finally turned my old ideas into reality—
I used AI to build a vocabulary memorization tool. GPT suggested naming it "Word Atlas".

Word Atlas Page
People who frequently use Zettelkasten note-taking and Obsidian have heard this quote:
Knowledge lies in connections, not classifications.
I think words are the same—a word should be connected to other words in a network structure, except for cognates which belong to the same category.
Cognates
Cognates fall into two types:
- Inflection: Same word changes form due to grammar/syntax needs, meaning/part of speech usually unchanged. E.g., play → plays.
- Derivatives: New words formed by adding prefixes/suffixes, meaning/part of speech may change. E.g., happy → happiness.
In Word Atlas, nodes belonging to the same family cluster together, enclosed by a circle representing the family. Visually, they look like "colonies".
Related Words
Related words fall into four types:
- Synonyms
- Near-synonyms
- Antonyms
- Spelling-similar words (judged by the ratio of longest common subsequence length to word length)
In Word Atlas, related word nodes and edges only appear when a node is selected, otherwise too many nodes/edges would render.
Word Page
Each word includes:
- Phonetic symbols for each part of speech
- Pronunciation for each part of speech: Youdao Dictionary API

Memorization Mode
The memorization page supports two methods:
- Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve: Most familiar method; many apps use improved FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) algorithms based on it. (Some say this wasn't proposed by Ebbinghaus)
- Gourd Method (proposed by blogger @HappyGourd): Memorize core meanings of many words at once, group by group. If you can recall 80% immediately, skip. No spaced repetition needed; instead, repeat through lists until mastery (usually 7-8 rounds).
The interface is simple and supports shuffling, so mom no longer worries about me remembering positions instead of words.
Daily tasks sync to calendar view.
