TL;DR

Dead by Daylight developers detailed recent matchmaking fixes following the 10.1.0 update, explaining how internal settings for win/loss streaks caused excessive skill disparity and outlining steps taken to rebalance ratings.

Matchmaking System Update

Since introducing the new rating system in Update 10.1.0, we have carefully monitored matchmaking data and player feedback. Many of you have reported that players with significant differences in skill level or playtime are being matched together, resulting in unbalanced matches.

With the introduction of the new rating system, it was necessary to reset all players' ratings once. We expected each player's rating to quickly converge to a value reflecting their actual skill. However, as you pointed out, this did not happen as intended. Our investigation revealed that one of the internal matchmaking settings unintentionally widened the range of potential opponents and teammates.

Adjusting Win/Loss Streak Weighting

This internal setting related to win and loss streaks. Originally, the goal was to widen the matchmaking range when a player experienced a streak, thereby increasing the impact on rating changes to help them reach their appropriate rating faster.

However, the actual settings caused excessive rating variance, leading to matches with a much wider range of skill levels than intended. Therefore, late last week, we adjusted this weighting to reduce the impact of win/loss streaks on ratings.

Although still early, current results look promising, showing a decrease in skill disparity among players and improvements aligned with our expectations. We will continue to monitor and verify matchmaking results over the coming weeks, so please share your experiences and opinions as we investigate further.

Reiteration on Rating Resets

It is important to note that even after the global rating reset in August, some players are still in the process of adjusting their ratings.

For example, if you haven't played The Unknown since the reset, your rating for that Killer may not yet accurately reflect your skill. Consequently, your first few games as The Unknown might feel unbalanced, but they should naturally converge to the correct rating tier as you play more. This applies to all Killers, not just The Unknown. As you play various Killers, each Killer's rating adjusts individually.

Looking Ahead

While this change alone won't create a perfect system, we believe it is an important step toward the matchmaking experience we aim to provide. We are continuously monitoring how this fix impacts matchmaking over time. We are also exploring long-term system improvements and will make further adjustments as needed.

Thank you for your understanding and for sharing your feedback! Your input was essential in fixing these issues last week. Thank you for helping us improve the system alongside us. We will keep you updated as the matchmaking system evolves.
