TL;DR

This analysis of the top 100 profitable on-chain meme traders reveals that success stems from low-frequency trading, concentrated portfolios, and patience rather than insider knowledge or high follower counts.

Everyone has a theory about the guys at the top of the PnL leaderboard. Insiders. Devs. Bots. Lucky.

I had a theory too. I was wrong, and it took me 2 days and 100 wallets to find out how.

Here is the setup.

fomo: link has a leaderboard where u can't lie: every wallet is on-chain, every trade is public, the PnL is computed from the chain, not from a screenshot.

I took the top 100 by all-time PnL, $141M between them, pulled everything (PnL, volume, trades, holdings, followers), and then opened the trade histories of the ones that didn't make sense.

About me, so u know who is counting, and it's not a larp:

So far i’m sitting at $170k all-time profit in last 3 months of trading memes, turned $210k into $385k

and if you want to learn how to actually make a living trading memes, i’d recommend reading 2 of my previous articles

if you’re completely new to this, it’s better to read those before this one

The rules and patterns we identified:

First thing we’ll do is go through the data so you understand who we’re analyzing, how pnl is calculated, and so on

100 wallets, +$141M combined. 50 above $1M, 16 above $2M. The top 10 made 32% of the total. PnL on fomo is combined (realized + unrealized)

Pattern 1. How much do they trade?

What the data says: the median wallet in the top 100 did 1,373 trades. But the spread is huge, from 36 trades to 7,760.

But...The overlap: the less they trade, the more each trade makes.

✧ under 300 trades: $4,162 per trade

✧ 300 to 2,000: $1,036 per trade

✧ 2,000+: $417 per trade

10x difference per trade between the quiet ones and the busy ones.

One more thing: the wallets with few followers (so few copytraders) that still made the top of the board are the ones that trade the least.

kv4rl: 103 trades, $1.2M, holds 3 coins, 75% of it sold.

end837: 89 trades, $565k.

TheOldNite: 120 trades, $545k, 1,676 followers.

RunningClam: 429 trades, $2.17M, 90% sold.

Why do they trade less?

Every trade costs % in fees + slippage = 2-6%, and every trade is a new chance to be wrong.

The quiet wallets pay that cost 100 times. The busy ones pay it 5,000 times.

So if you want to make money by trading (not using your followers as exit. liq - trade less)

Pattern 2. Does fame matter?

What the data says: followers and PnL do correlate. The big accounts are big.

But... 17 of the top 100 have under 10k followers, 10 have under 5k. Together they made $11.4M, and I had never heard of a single one of them.

And per trade the small accounts win, by a lot:

✧ under 10k followers: $2,791 per trade

✧ 10k to 100k: $789

✧ over 100k: $462

spartee: 3,000 followers, +$706k.

kingofgotham: 5,923 followers, +$672k.

Why?

Size: a $500k buy moves a $20M coin on the way in and on the way out. A $5k buy doesn't.

And copytraders: when 2,000 people copy an entry, the entry runs, and the exit gets sold into them. Part of a big account's edge is its followers. u are that part.

So: from big accounts copy the process (what they hold, how long, when they add). For entries, follow the small wallets. The list is at the end.

Pattern 3. What does a top wallet look like from inside?

I opened the full history of #4, DumbCrayonEater, $4.37M on the board.

𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗽 - inline image

What the data says: his last 30 closed trades:

8 wins, 22 losses. 27% win rate. Median hold 37 days. One closed position, $ANSEM, made $843k, bought when the coin was 11 days old, held 90 days.

But... $3.58M of his $4.37M is one open position in $AI. Unsold. 82% of his leaderboard number is a coin he's still holding.

Why does it look like this?

Because in most of the cases, that's what winning on memes is. Wrong 3 times out of 4. Losses a third the size of the wins. One trade makes almost all the money. And the biggest trade of his life is still open, which means his number can change a lot in either direction.

So: u don't need to be right often. u need the one u're right about to be held for months.

That's why you should never all-in in 1 coin, and keep staying liquid.

Pattern 4. How many coins do they hold?

What the data says: median 25 tokens. 22 wallets hold 10 or fewer, 24 hold 50 or more. The ones who make the most per trade sit at the low end

But in general, both ends work. kv4rl holds 3 and made $1.2M. Tekkerrss holds 411 and made $576k.

But... more coins means less per trade (correlation -0.25), and the 50+ portfolios belong to wallets that trade all day.

So: with a job, stay under 10 coins. The spray style belongs to people doing 4,000 trades a year.

9 traders nobody is talking about you need to follow

Under 20k followers, over $2,000 per trade, and they actually sold (PnL between 20% and 100% of volume):

  1. end837: $565k, 89 trades, $6,348 per trade, 4,832 followers
  2. TheOldNite: $545k, 120 trades, $4,539 per trade, 1,676 followers
  3. tremendoustoad: $733k, 176 trades, $4,162 per trade, 8,880 followers
  4. LehmanFarters: $1.21M, 308 trades, $3,927 per trade, 11,314 followers
  5. dtrainz: $585k, 192 trades, $3,048 per trade, 5,065 followers
  6. kingofgotham: $672k, 246 trades, $2,733 per trade, 5,923 followers
  7. spartee: $706k, 289 trades, $2,444 per trade, 3,000 followers
  8. TheDazzleNovak: $1.06M, 434 trades, $2,439 per trade, 16,090 followers
  9. justtesting: $1.18M, 519 trades, $2,282 per trade, 10,874 followers

So, insiders or lucky?

Neither, mostly. A few got it from outside.

A quarter are holding something that went up and haven't sold.

18 churned their way in and paid the launchpad for it. The rest traded, sold and kept it, and their pattern is boring: fewer trades, longer holds, one big position, part of it taken off the table.

None of that needs insider info. It needs patience and a calculator, and sometimes followers.
