Risks and Benefits of Artificial Intelligence: Neither Good nor Bad, but a Powerful Tool

- A Space of Possibilities Like Schrödinger’s cat, artificial intelligence can be understood as a space of possibilities that has not yet taken a single definitive form: it is not inherently beneficial or inherently harmful.Artificial intelligence is a tool capable of amplifying intentions, abilities, vulnerabilities, and mistakes. Its effects depend on the network of relationships in which it is designed, distributed, and used. The central question, therefore, is not whether AI should be assigned a human morality, but how we understand the context in which it operates and the role humans retain in guiding, evaluating, and correcting it.multiple possibilities → amplification → vulnerability → discernment → shared responsibilityAI does not decide who we are: it amplifies what we bring into the system. It can support learning, creativity, research, organization, and the ability to address complex problems. The same technology can therefore produce very different outcomes depending on intention, competence, context, and the limits established by the person using it.Vulnerability, Curiosity, and Discernment Protection should not be designed only around a fixed category of “fragile people.” Vulnerability can be psychological, informational, economic, social, or situational. Even a highly competent person can become vulnerable in a high-stakes context such as health care, law, finance, or a personal crisis.Contexts of greater vulnerability require stronger safeguards, greater transparency, and more cautious limits. People who use AI for curiosity, study, work, and growth primarily need literacy, discernment, information verification, and an understanding of the system’s limitations. These needs are not mutually exclusive: the same person may be curious in one area and vulnerable in another.The goal is not to replace human judgment, but to make it more informed, conscious, and responsible. Human beings should not be treated only as victims of automation, nor automatically blamed when a complex system causes harm. They should remain agents capable of understanding, intervening, correcting, and accepting responsibility proportionate to the control they actually exercised.Artificial intelligence is neither a demon to fear nor a savior to obey. It is an amplifying force within a human system. Precisely because it amplifies, it requires maturity.
Chapter TwoDistribution Companies: When Releasing a General-Purpose Product Becomes a Mission, but Also a Risk
The leading companies in the field often find themselves in an uncomfortable position. On one hand, every company wants to release an efficient, easy-to-use model: a tool capable of supporting a broad range of services—from agents and coding to organizational support, information, and public education—but also simple “companionship,” with language that is accessible to everyone. The goal is to build a system that is engaging while becoming increasingly accurate at carrying out its tasks.This is also where companies face some of their greatest challenges: regulation, ethics, the protection of vulnerable people, and legislation. For a company that aims to deliver the best possible product, this is a delicate field, marked by controversy and conflicting opinions among users. These difficulties do not automatically absolve or condemn anyone; they describe the complexity of a rapidly expanding sector.In trying to maintain broad standards of safety, usability, testing, reliability, and operational performance, a company must balance many different demands at once. It is legitimate for users to hold different opinions. Respectful, ongoing discussion is one of the best tools for evaluating a product as a whole, and meaningful communication between companies and their users should never be absent.At the same time, users should try to understand the difficult position of a rapidly expanding field that is still operating within rules that are not always fully defined or stable. Dialogue helps clarify what users actually need. Users, in turn, should remember that a distributed product must be efficient, but also safe across different contexts of use.The question before us is this: a tool is not, by itself, either good or bad. Artificial intelligence can be an extraordinary resource for working, studying, finding motivation, communicating, or simply engaging in conversation and interaction. There is no judgment in that. The important question is who uses the tool, how it is used, and in what context.We cannot know with certainty whether every user will exercise good judgment. AI is an amplifier. It can amplify curiosity, the desire for knowledge, dialogue, creativity, and positive human qualities; but it can also amplify dangerous, unlawful, or ambiguous behavior.powerful tool + human context + judgment + oversight = responsible useWe should therefore ask: does responsibility for the final, proper use of a product belong exclusively to the companies that build and distribute it, or does it also involve users and the way they promote healthy and responsible practices? As stated above, there are no absolute answers and no simple division between “guilty” and “innocent.” This field is still growing and defining itself.The essential point is never to forget the human factor: companies must design, test, monitor, and correct their systems; users must learn, verify, exercise judgment, and recognize the tool’s limitations.Responsibility should neither disappear nor be assigned carelessly. It should be distributed according to each actor’s real ability to design, influence, control, and correct the system.
