These are different promises, and the distinction matters.
OpenAI and Anthropic commit not to train on ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude Enterprise customer data by default. But a promise not to train isn’t a promise not to keep.
Evenzero data retention has a defined scope. With Anthropic, eligible services require approval, and it does not cover the Claude web, desktop, or mobile chat interfaces. Claude Enterprise retains data indefinitely by default unless an administrator sets a custom retention period.
Legal obligations can also affect retention. In 2025, a federal judge ordered OpenAI to preserve certain ChatGPT conversations, including ones users had deleted, as part oflitigation involving The New York Times.
And no provider’s retention policy can protect copies stored elsewhere in your workflow.
For professionals handling confidential information, the question goes beyond whether their data trains a model. Where does it go? Who can access it? What remains when the work is finished?
