TL;DR

Dead by Daylight is updating its internal rating system in version 10.1.0 to reflect in-game contributions like generator repair and hook saves, moving away from a simple kill/escape metric.

We are pleased to announce an update to the internal rating calculation method used in Dead by Daylight, starting with Update 10.1.0 scheduled for release on August 26!

What is Internal Rating?

Internal rating is a numerical value assigned to each player, intended to serve as an indicator of player skill and proficiency. This rating increases or decreases based on match results and is used for matchmaking to ensure you play against opponents of equal skill.

Since Killers have different abilities, each character has its own internal rating, while Survivors share a common rating across all characters.

Current Rating Calculation Method (Up to Update 10.0.2)

To calculate internal ratings more accurately, the current formula treats one match as "four 1v1 encounters between the Killer and the Survivors."

  • The Killer "wins" in terms of internal rating if they kill the opposing Survivor by any means.
  • The Survivor "wins" if they escape through the Exit Gates.
  • Hatch escapes are treated as a "draw" because they involve a significant element of luck.

The "winner" sees their internal rating rise, while the "loser" sees it decrease. This determination occurs once per match for Survivors and four times per match for the Killer.

Issues with the Current Version

While the current version aligned with the basic concept of Dead by Daylight—whether the Killer can kill or the Survivor can escape—it had the disadvantage of completely ignoring actions within the match.

For example, even if a Survivor repaired multiple generators or bought significant time for the team during a chase, they would "lose" and their rating would drop if they failed to escape.

On the Killer side, no matter how hard they chased or how many times they hooked Survivors, they would "lose" and their rating would drop if they couldn't secure the final kill.

We received feedback from players that the current rating formula does not reflect all aspects of skill. We have been considering ways to improve this and conducting system-side tests for a long time.

New Rating Calculation Method (From Update 10.1.0 Onwards)

Starting with Update 10.1.0, rating calculations will not only consider survival or death but will also heavily evaluate actions within the trial.

Specifically, we have prepared unique indicators based on the Emblems currently used for Grade evaluations. Each action will be tallied by the system to determine "how much you contributed to the progress of the trial" compared to the other four players. This will decide whose internal rating increases or decreases.

"Actions that contribute to trial progress" include the following (this is not an exhaustive list!):

Killer

  • Sabotaging generator repairs
  • Hooking or sacrificing Survivors
  • Attacking Survivors
  • Ending chases quickly

Survivor

  • Repairing generators or cleansing totems
  • Escaping while taking as little damage as possible
  • Protecting, healing, or unhooking teammates
  • Buying time during chases

We hope this change will allow the internal rating to more accurately reflect player skill.

The internal rating calculation method is scheduled to switch simultaneously with the release of Update 10.1.0. We plan to continue making adjustments and improvements over the long term, so please look forward to it!

Until next time...
