Open ChatGPT and ask it to recommend something in your category. Then open Google and search the same thing.
Different winners. Almost every time.
The brands ChatGPT names are often not the ones at the top of Google. And the habits that earned those #1 spots, the keyword stuffing, the endless blog content, the backlink chasing, are quietly making those same brands invisible to AI.
We spend our days at Algomizer pulling apart how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini decide what to recommend. This guide is the playbook we wish every brand had a year ago.
Here's how to win 👇

Step 0: Audit where you stand
Before you change anything, find out if you're already showing up.
Open ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. For each one, ask the questions a real buyer would type before choosing something in your category. "Best X for someone like me." "Alternatives to Y." "What's the right tool for Z."
Write down what you see:
- Are you mentioned at all?
- Which brands keep getting named instead?
- Which sources do the models quote (Reddit, YouTube, comparison sites, articles)?
That list is your map.
How Algomizer does it for you. We run the same audit for free, at scale across every major AI model, and hand you back a dashboard showing where you appear and where competitors are taking your spot.
Step 1: Build pages AI can actually quote
AI doesn't count keywords. It reads for meaning, and it wants the cleanest possible sentence to lift into its reply.
A 2,000-word essay with the answer buried in paragraph six is useless to it. A page that opens with a direct, self-contained answer in the first 60 words gets pulled into AI responses constantly.
Do this: For every page that matters, identify the single sentence that answers the question someone would ask AI. Move it to the top. Cut the SEO-flavored intros. Lead with the answer.
How Algomizer does it for you. We rebuild client pages around what each model actually quotes, knowing the sentence structures and lengths ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini each prefer. Clients see their own wording show up verbatim inside AI responses.
Step 2: Get talked about outside your own site
AI barely trusts what you say about yourself. What moves the needle is what other people say about you, in places the model treats as honest:
- Reddit threads in your subcategory
- YouTube reviews from creators in your space
- Comparison sites like G2, Capterra, or industry equivalents
- A solid Wikipedia entry, if your brand qualifies
- Independent write-ups, original research that other writers want to quote
Ten strangers describing you the same way is worth more than a hundred pages you wrote yourself. A link you bought means almost nothing here. A mention you earned means everything.
Do this: Pick the two surfaces from that list where you're weakest, and put real effort into showing up there over the next 90 days.
How Algomizer does it for you. We track citation patterns per category per model, so we can tell you exactly which two surfaces will move your visibility most. Then we run the work and re-test inside actual AI answers.
Step 3: Aim for the short list
AI hands back a short list and stops. There's no page two, no "see more," no scrolling to find you. You're one of the few names it gives, or you don't exist.
That changes how you should think about effort. Spreading content across 500 keywords will get you named in zero of them.
Do this: Identify the 10 to 20 specific questions where being named would actually move your business, and concentrate everything on winning those.
How Algomizer does it for you. We model the right 10 to 20 with real data: which questions your buyers actually ask AI, where the gap with competitors is closeable, and what to prioritize before you spend a dollar on content.
Step 4: Keep everything fresh
AI leans toward fresher information. A page that's been sitting untouched since 2022 reads as stale, and stale content drops out of AI answers without warning.
Do this: Pick the 10 to 20 pages that matter most for AI visibility, and set a quarterly schedule to refresh them. Update stats, add recent examples, refresh the published date.
Step 5: Make it a system
Doing Steps 0 through 4 once is not enough.
Each model behaves a little differently. What earns you a mention in ChatGPT can differ from what works in Perplexity or Gemini. And all of them keep updating, so the rules shift under you and a position you won in March can quietly slip in June.
Do this: Re-run your Step 0 audit every month. Track which questions you're winning, which you're losing, and which models you're showing up in. Treat it as a real channel that needs ongoing attention.
How Algomizer does it for you. We run it as a continuous system across every major model. When a key question dips after a model update, we see it in days and adjust before you fall back out.
Why this is hard to do yourself
If you've read this far and thought "this is a full-time job," you're right. It is.
Doing it well requires:
- Knowing how each model thinks, because what wins in ChatGPT can lose in Perplexity, and the differences are not intuitive
- Constant monitoring, because rankings inside AI shift weekly as models retrain and reweight
- A library of tested patterns, because the format that gets quoted is different from the format that ranks
- Ongoing relationships with the surfaces AI trusts most in your category
- Engineering discipline, because this is more like running an experiment than writing marketing copy
Most marketing teams have the budget for one or two of those. Almost none have all five.

How we work
We don't bolt AI search onto an old SEO playbook. We reverse-engineer how each model picks what to name, re-test as they shift, and aim everything at getting our clients into those answers.
The outcome we're aiming at is concrete:
- You start getting named in AI answers for the questions your buyers ask
- You see exactly where you stand across every major model
- You get higher-intent traffic that arrives pre-decided, because the AI already did the comparing before it sent them
- You lock in the spot early, while most of your competitors still don't know the game changed
The full playbook in one place
If you remember nothing else, remember this checklist:
Step 0: Audit where you stand in ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini
Step 1: Build pages AI can actually quote
Step 2: Get talked about outside your own site
Step 3: Aim for the short list (10-20 questions that matter)
Step 4: Keep everything fresh on a quarterly schedule
Step 5: Make it a system
The window to claim a spot in AI answers is open right now, mostly because most brands haven't noticed the shift. The names that lock in their position over the next year will look, a few years from now, a lot like the brands that got famous by being early to Google.
If you want a head start, we run a free check on where you currently stand. No commitment, just a clear picture of whether the AIs already recommend you or skip you for the questions your customers are asking.
It's still early enough to win this.
