Red Hartebeest running in Kalahari summer

The Red Hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) 🇿🇦 South Africa’s high-stamina Kalahari endurance runners! 🌞🏜️🦌 Under the bright midday sun of the Kalahari plains in summer, a herd suddenly erupts into a powerful endurance run across the open grasslands. With their distinctive long faces, high-set eyes, and boldly curved horns held high, these large reddish-brown antelope move with surprising grace and coordination, their 150–200 kg bodies perfectly scaled against scattered acacia trees and vast horizons. Built for distance rather than short sprints, they are among Africa’s most tireless runners, capable of maintaining high speeds over long stretches while zigzagging to confuse predators. Males weigh up to 150–180 kg, females around 120–150 kg; shoulder height ~1.25–1.35 m. Can reach speeds of 55–80 km/h with exceptional stamina for sustained running. Live in herds of 10–30 (sometimes more), highly alert and visual, using coordinated movements for safety on open plains. Primarily graze on grasses but also browse leaves; highly adapted to arid Kalahari conditions with ability to go without water for long periods. Distinctive lyre-shaped horns joined at the base, longer face than other hartebeest subspecies.
