No advertising costs. No showing your face. No using your voice. Wouldn't you be interested if there was a way to earn money online like that?
Cases have been reported overseas of people earning $30,000 (about 5 million yen) in a single month by combining Pinterest and affiliate marketing. Since this is an individual example, there is no guarantee that anyone can replicate it. However, I want to introduce it because very few people in the Japanese-speaking world are using this method yet. X, blogs, and YouTube are already crowded with participants, leading to a war of attrition. Pinterest x AI is just ahead of that curve.
Pinterest is a Search Engine Where People Gather Just Before Buying
Many people think of Pinterest as a social networking site for collecting photos. They imagine it as a place to save wedding preparations or cooking recipes. This perception is fundamentally skewed.
Pinterest is an image-based search engine. Users on Instagram and TikTok are just browsing to kill time, making it difficult to sell something. Pinterest users are different. They search with a premise of buying something, such as:
"Skincare for sensitive skin"
"Home office desk on a budget"
This state is called "future purchase intent."
It's easier to understand when you look at the numbers.
Pinterest's monthly active users reached 631 million by 2026. 80% of weekly users say they were influenced by Pinterest in their purchasing decisions. In Japan, 9.19 million people use it, accounting for 7.5% of the total population. 62% of users are female, and those aged 18-34 account for 61.7% of the ad reach. Its global ranking remains at 12th, and it is not as saturated as in Europe and the US. This means that competition for Japanese-language content is still thin.
Why It Works Without Showing Your Face or Having 0 Followers
Pinterest's algorithm doesn't care who the poster is. It only looks at how well the pin matches the keywords. Even a new account with 0 followers will be displayed if the keywords and images match. The evaluation criteria are only eye-catching images and descriptions containing keywords. No voice, face, or name is required.
Posts on Instagram and TikTok disappear after 24 to 48 hours. Conversely, because Pinterest is a search engine, posts continue to be searched for long after they are posted. A single pin becomes an asset that continues to generate clicks for months or even years after publication.
AI Takes Over the Entire Production Process
The reason Pinterest affiliate marketing was tedious was the need to repeat image creation, copy creation, and description writing every day. This was the point of failure.
By 2026, most of this process can be left to AI.
Canva's Magic Design automatically generates more than 10 pin variations from a keyword or a single image. For overlaying text on images, Ideogram V3 has reached 90-95% accuracy in character rendering, making it less likely to produce garbled text.
Titles and descriptions are generated by ChatGPT or Claude. The trick is not to pack multiple tasks into a single prompt. If you specify roles and constraints and separate prompts for each task, inconsistencies will decrease.
The estimated time required for production is 3-4 hours per week for pin creation, 2-3 hours per week for keyword research, and 1-2 hours per week for improvement work. We are now in an era where one person can handle tasks that used to be performed by small production companies without showing their face or using their voice.
Niche Selection and Affiliate Registration Strategy
First, narrow down to one theme. High-paying niches overseas include beauty and skincare, home decor, personal finance, and AI/SaaS tools. In the beauty niche, it's not uncommon to find products on ClickBank with commissions of over $300 per sale. Home decor is said to account for 79% of Pinterest users' interests, and purchase intent is high.
It's better not to pick a niche that is too broad. Instead of "productivity tools," narrowing it down to "desk tools for remote workers" will increase the relevance in searches.
When registering for affiliate programs, you need to choose those that allow applications without a website. Representative examples include Amazon Associates, ClickBank, Rakuten Advertising, and ShareASale. When registering, never forget to check if Pinterest can be used as a traffic source and if direct linking is permitted. Overlooking this can lead to policy violations later.
5 Steps from Pin Production to Operation
The steps are as follows:
- Create images with AI. In addition to Canva templates, mix in one photo you took yourself or an actual product image. It is said that these are more trusted and grow better than pins made only with AI.
- Create titles and descriptions with ChatGPT or Claude. Be sure to include niche keywords.
- Categorize pins into boards. Dividing them by niche, such as "Home Gym Essentials," improves search evaluation within Pinterest.
- Post about 5 to 15 pins per day. You can use scheduling tools to create them in bulk and post automatically.
- Check the keywords and designs that performed well on the business account's analytics dashboard and mass-produce based on those patterns.
Keywords that appear in the search bar's autocomplete are direct data on demand. It is said that 97% of searches on Pinterest do not include brand names; people search for specific problems or conditions. Longer phrase keywords have clearer search intent and are more likely to lead to conversions.
4 Pitfalls to Avoid
To be fair, I will also write about the risks.
- The "churn and burn" method of posting 50 identical pins a day no longer works. Pinterest now reads the text within images to determine if it matches the linked content and penalizes high-volume, low-quality posting.
- Misleading images or exaggerated claims can cause account suspension. Represent products within the scope of their actual effects.
- Descriptions for each pin require notations such as #ad or #affiliate. If operating in Japan, you are subject to the stealth marketing regulations that took effect on October 1, 2023. Violations can lead to imprisonment for up to 2 years or a fine of up to 3 million yen, so notations like #PR or #Advertising are essential.
- You won't earn money immediately. Overseas benchmarks suggest earning about $100-$500 per month for the first 1-3 months, with traffic growing and stable commissions starting from 4-8 months, and the accumulated pins taking full effect from 9-18 months. Figures like the $30,000 per month mentioned at the beginning are for mature accounts and do not happen in the first month.
Pinterest is a search engine where people gather just before buying. This method involves building up pins created with AI as assets. You don't need a face, a voice, or followers. All you need is to narrow down to one niche and continue without dropping quality. One thing you can do today is open a Pinterest business account for free and write down one niche you can talk about. Whether that changes the landscape six months from now, we don't know yet.
