Why it works

Tags that fit the field and the video

  • Counted the way YouTube counts

Every set fits within 500 characters, counting the commas and the 2 extra characters YouTube adds for a tag with a space.

  • Grouped by what they're for

Main-topic tags first, then the specific things in your video, then other names and spellings. YouTube says tags help most when a topic is often misspelled.

  • Ready to paste

Remove any tag with a click, then copy the rest as one comma-separated list for the Tags field in YouTube Studio.

Before you add tags

What YouTube tags do, and what they don't

Tags play a small part in how people find a video. YouTube says other parts of your upload do more, so keep tags short and accurate.

Most of the work is in the title and the description, and there's a free generator for each.

Tag counter

Check your tags against the 500-character limit

0/500 characters

Paste your tags, separated by commas, to count them.

  • 500 characters or fewer

All tags together, counting commas and 2 extra for each tag with a space.

  • No repeated tags

A tag used twice takes up characters without adding anything.

Tags are split at commas and line breaks. Tags with spaces are shown in quotes, the way YouTube counts them.

How it works

Add YouTube tags in three steps

  1. Describe your video

Say what happens in the video. Add a main keyword if you have one, and it becomes the first tag.

  2. Keep the ones that fit

Click any tag that isn't right for your video to leave it out. The character count updates as you go.

  3. Paste them into YouTube Studio

Copy the list into the Tags field. It's under More options when you upload, or Show more on a published video.

YouTube tags FAQ

  • Do YouTube tags still matter?

A little. YouTube says your title, thumbnail and description matter more for helping people find a video. Tags are mainly useful when your topic is often misspelled, and otherwise play a minimal role. Spend most of your time on the title and description.

  • What's the character limit for YouTube tags?

All your tags together can use up to 500 characters. The limit is for the whole field, not each tag, and every set from this generator fits within it.

  • How does YouTube count tag characters?

The commas between tags count, and a tag with a space counts as if it were in quotation marks, so it uses 2 extra characters. For example, Foo-Baz counts as 7 characters and Foo Baz as 9. The tag counter on this page uses the same rule.

  • How many tags should I use?

YouTube doesn't recommend a number. Since tags play a small role, a short set of accurate tags is enough: the main topic, a few specific things from the video and any common misspellings.

  • What's the difference between tags and hashtags?

Tags go in the Tags field in YouTube Studio. Hashtags start with # and go in your title or description, where viewers can click them. Use the YouTube Hashtag Generator for those.

  • Where do I add tags in YouTube Studio?

When you upload, select More options in the Details step. For a video you've already published, open it from Content and select Show more. Then paste your tags into the Tags field.

  • Should I put tags in my video description?

No. YouTube's spam policy doesn't allow adding lots of tags to a video's description. Keep tags in the Tags field and write the description for viewers.

  • Does it write tags in other languages?

Yes. Tags are written in the language you use to describe the video, so describe it in Spanish to get Spanish tags.

  • Is this YouTube tag generator free?

Yes. You can generate tags without signing up, up to a daily limit. To keep going, continue in YouMind.
